WooHoo, I got one in first! Do I get a cookie?
Good for you little camper! Now I hope it will stop all the Freeny to Cowboys talk and allow us to focus on realistic issues instead of pipe dreams. I actually hope the Raven tag LB Thomas so we can kill those rumors as well. Now if the Chargers tag Deilman then I would be worried. And since the Bengals have already used their tag on Justin Smith then I can still hope on Steinbach.
I am also tired of these players whining about being tagged. While I understand it limits the signing bonus money up front you would receive it does give the owners the right to their best player. I do think it should only be used on a player for one season and if a team can't sign ihim in that year then that player should have a right to be unrestricted. Orlando Pace is an example of how ugly it can get by being tagged for two seasons straight and Seattle did the same thing to OL Jones where he would hold out until the start of the season and play for the "tagged" money. Both eventually signed long term deals but I think it was unfair to the player to handcuff them every season they were free agents. But I understand that it gives the player the most leverage because he could simply demand an out of space contract and the team would be force to let there best player go. I guess it can all be perfect.
King wrote a great article today in MMQ where he also agrees that the system has worked for 14 years so quit whining about making an average of the top 5 players at your position! The only problem this season is the franchise tag is less than market value for the players. For example, CB Samuel of the Patriots is tagged so he will make about $7.7 million this season. But as a free agent, who could easily command about a $16-$18 million signing bonus and still average about $7 million a season. So the Patriots are actually getting a bargain in tagging him.
There is no way that the Colts can sign Freeny. He is looking for a bonus of about $20 million and about $8 million per season. The Colts have only about $1 million in cap space. So although they have franchise him, they will have to do some serious restructing to Mannings contract to get this deal done!
