Colts coaches Tom Moore and Howard Mudd officially retire

By Mike Chappell
Posted: May 14, 2009

Offensive coordinator Tom Moore and offensive line coach Howard Mudd have formally filed their retirement papers with the Indianapolis Colts, according to the team’s owner.

Jim Irsay confirmed this afternoon he has received the necessary documentation from the team’s two long-time assistants. Each decided to retire because of a recent change in the NFL’s pension plan.

Moore, 70, and Mudd, 67, have been with the Colts since 1998. Moore’s NFL career spans 32 years and five teams. Mudd has been an NFL assistant with six teams the past 35 years and has the longest consecutive term of service in the league.

“We’ve made it through a number of transitions in the past and we’ll make it through this one,’’ Irsay said. “I’m very pleased with the direction we’re headed.

Maybe Moore can come back to Iowa and we can finally get rid of Ken O'Keefe.

The Colts are going through some enormous changes. Will be interesting to see how they pan out.

If any organization can afford to not screw with their pension plan it is the NFL - a lot of assistants are pissed off about this, primarily the older never going to be considered for a HC job guys. The fact that the league is now letting teams do their own thing pension-wise is crazy. Those guys move around with greate frequency - you need a general plan that covers everyone. What happens if you spend 3 years in Dallas, then move to Az for a couple of years (and so on) -- they both have different plans which may not recognize "credit" from the other team. The last thing someone wants is to retire with a 4-5 years of service credit from 6 or so teams... that would greatly reduce their benefits.

All this does is guarantee that coaches will unionize so that they can collectively bargain.

No big deal.

From watching espn and listening broadcasters, Peyton has been the offensive coordinator.

So they should be just A-OK.

supposedly Moore used to give Peyton 3 plays and let Peyton decide on which one to call before every snap.

I have read lots of things, and they all get blown out of proportion when espn and the writers got involved.

That is 3 very good coaches the colts have lost. I am not a fan of dungy's and think he is vastly overrated, but he seemed to have it working there.

Big transistion for them.

I think the loss of Mudd is really gonna hurt so will Moore's too, I want to see Peyton reaction when things aren't going well on offense.

That's a whole lot of coaching changes to have to overcome in one offseason. They're going to struggle for a bit, I think, early on.

what are you confused about, I just dont like the style his teams play in. I dont like his layed back approach and I hate watching defense play that tampa -2. Drives me crazy.

He did alot of winning in indy though so you can only say it worked, but I am not a fan of that approach.

Its the same one we have here. I just dont like it.

This is the only offensive coordinator Peyton has ever known. A pretty drastic change for a QB who doesnt enjoy variables and unknowns. Not to mention losing his life long security blanket in Marvin Harrison.

The new coaching benefit changes probably are a reason why they are leaving, but I also believe some of these guys see the writing on the wall. The Colts are a team past their peak and are giong to start to slowly decline. If they really felt in their heart of hearts they had the same quality of team they had 3 or 4 years ago and a legit SB contender they would gut it out for a chance at another ring.

Why do you dislike watching the tampa-2? It is an attacking defense, that is all about making plays. It really is not all that difference between the type of defense we used to run under Jimmy Johnson.

Not sure, I just hate watching it.

It is similar to the cover 4 scheme we ran with small linebackers.

I just dont. Maybe I am just tired of hearing about it!

I cant stand it.

Same here ... it just strikes me as such a boring defense to watch if you enjoy the chess match of football. There's not any blitzing or shifting or movement.

This is a big loss for the Colts' offense. Losing both of those guys will make for huge changes there. I know Manning runs the offense for the most part but that's during the game, he doesn't coach the players or come up with the game plans or run practices.

I've always liked the Colts (was a huge Unitas fan as a kid) and have been hoping to see a Cowboys-Colts SB. Now, I don't think they will get there again unless they find some guys to fill the shoes of Moore & Mudd (sounds like a law firm).

I know Manning gets all the love but Dungy's defense is the reason they won the Superbowl that year.

Manning did everything he could to lose in the playoffs and the Colts defense denied Manning from his annual choke fest.
