February 23
(12:01 AM): Combine to heat up… After three days spent mostly in back rooms either being medically tested or interviewed by teams, the first group of prospects at the scouting combine in Indianapolis will finally get on the field later today for physical tests and positional drills. Both the offensive linemen and TEs will be on the field later this morning to run their 40 and the other drills. Fans who can’t attend in person - and that’s just about everybody as the combine workouts are not open to the public or for that matter most media - the NFL Network will have a full day of coverage starting at 11 AM ET. The OL and TEs, will be followed on the field by the QBs, RBs and WRs on Sunday, the defensive linemen and LBs on Monday and the defensive backs on Tuesday to wrap up the week.
Combine pot pourri…. For the record, Atlanta called tails to win Friday’s coin flip with Oakland to get the third pick at the 2008 draft; had the Falcons called heads, Oakland would have won the third pick, while Atlanta would have had to have a second flip with Kansas City for the 4th and 5th picks. As it is, Oakland will now pick fourth with the Chiefs scheduled to select 5th… While there still does not appear to be a consensus #1 pick in the 2008 draft class, there is a growing sense that Miami will take Virginia DE Chris Long with the top pick if the Dolphins keep the top pick… While there has been a lot of focus on the top 5 picks this coming April, what with the coin flip and all, however, there is also something of a interesting situation at the 6th and 7th picks. The Jets have the 6th selection, while the Patriots will have the 7th selection with a pick acquired from San Francisco last April. And no teams - or at least their current managements - dislike each other more than the Jets and Patriots. Would the Jets picking 6th, for example, take a player they think that the Patriots really want for themselves. Just a thought!… When the defensive linemen take the field on Monday, LSU Glenn Dorsey, one of the top 6 prospects this year at any position, may take a pass. Dorsey, who was banged up late in the season, has said he might not work out in Indianapolis, but instead will hold a private workout in a few weeks. Arkansas RB Darren McFadden, though, is reportedly leaning toward running on Sunday morning but won't make a final decison until then… Add the offensive linemen, and especially the OTs, to the list of positions that appears to be very strong at this year’s draft. Kevin Colbert, the director of football operations for the Pittsburgh Steelers. For example, is being quoted as saying ''It's the best group of tackles I've seen in 24 years, collectively. The majority of them can play on the left side or play both sides. It's unusual to have that many guys that big and that athletic and that productive.''

Leodis McKelvin/CB/Troy

- Measured in at 5 feet 10 inches tall and 190 pounds.

- Only corner who openly stated he should be the first taken at his position.

- Automatically knew the stats of when he faced Calvin Johnson last season. "2 for 9". Johnson caught 2 balls out of the 9 thrown his way.

- Interviewed by the Lions, specifically General Manager Matt Millen.

- Feels he has great hips, likes to tackle, has an all around game with his return skills as well.

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie/CB/Tennessee St.

- Feels he needs to go "three for three" and impress people at the Senior Bowl, the Combine, and then at his pro day.

- Tennessee St. was the only school to recruit the corner as a result of going to four different high schools and only playing one full year of organized football.

- Played on all the special teams during his Tennessee career.

- Interviewed with the Jaguars and Cowboys.

Mike Jenkins/CB/South Florida

- Measured in at 5 feet 10 inches tall and 197 pounds.

- Plans a full workout.

- Teams shwoing some interesting: Rams, Saints, Panthers, and Ravens.

- Felt the best receiver faced this year was Harry Douglas of Louisville.

Chris Ellis/DE/Virginia Tech

- Measured in at 6 feet 4 and a half inches tall and 263 pounds.

- Teams have been split on where he will play at the next level, either as a 34 outside linebacker or a 43 defensive end.

Update 1:30 EST

Aqib Talib/CB/Kansas

- Measured in at 6 feet tall and 202 pounds.

- Plans on doing a full workout here at the Combine.

- Already interviewed by the New England Patriots.

- Considers his strengths to be his ball skills, especially in man coverage.

- Felt everything set itself up perfectly to declare early as an underclassman. Had not decided on declaring until after the Orange Bowl.

- Toughest opponent faced during career was Virginia Tech wide receiver, Eddie Royal.

Chevis Jackson/CB/LSU

- Measured in at 6 feet tall and 192 pounds.

- When asked what system he would feel comfortable in, the Tiger corner told reports, "I believe I can fit any scheme. With Coach Saban and then Coach Pellini, we ran an NFL style defense."

- Still talks with former teammate Corey Webster.

- Will do a full workout.

- Interestingly enough the corner was wearing a Denver Broncos cap.

Kenny Phillips/S/Miami

- Measured in at 6 feet 2 inches tall and 212 pounds.

- Declared early as an underclassman because he felt he accomplished almost every goal he strove for: leading the team in interceptions and being voted an All American. Obviously did not win the National Championship like he expected.

- Talks with former teammate and current New England Patriot, Brandon Meriweather.

- Ed Reed taught him as a freshman how to watch film properly.

Update 11:30 EST

Brandon Flowers/CB/Virginia Tech

- Measured in at 5 feet 9 inches tall and 189 pounds

- Has 26 total interviews set up. Already interviewed with the Buffalo Bills

- Will participate in a full workout.

- Virginia Tech's system was based mainly in man coverage which Flowers sees as a strength of his game. Also added his overall physicality and point of attack against the run was very important playing as the boundary corner.

- Influenced most by former teammate Eric Green.

Charles Godfrey/CB/Iowa

- Wants to be known as a phyical player and pattern his game after Green Bay Packer, Al Harris.

- Hawkeye Head Coach, Kirk Ferentz, was the reason Godfrey committed to Iowa. Felt they had a great relationship and enjoyed the fact Ferentz is very open and willing to listen to his players. The coach uses hs past with Bill Belichick and the Patriots as examples in talks with his players.

- When asked about playing for the Patriots, Godfrey responded with a large grin, "I hope they're looking at me."

Justin King/CB/Penn St.

- Measured in at 5 feet 11 inches tall and 192 pounds.

- Decided to declare early as an underclassmen after weighing the pros and cons, and in the end it came down to how much he could really improve by going back to Penn St.

- NFL Competition Committee graded out King as a 2nd to 3rd rounder before he declared.

- Wants to show he can backpedal here in Indianapolis

- In the system Penn St. employs, King is used to owkring with a cushion in coverage.

- Watches a lot of film on his favorite players: DeAngelo Hall, Samari Rolle, and Champ Bailey.

DeJuan Tribble/CB/Boston College

- Measured in at 5 feet 8 inches tall nd 189 pounds.

- Openly stated he needs to work on his man to man skills. Boston College is a zone team that mainly employs a Cover 4 scheme.
