Comics and Movies

Looking forward to seeing The Fantastic 4. It was my favorite comic as a kid. Galactus being in it is the chefs kiss.

Need a DC movie with Darkseid. I guess it would have to be a Superman movie as he is at least as strong as Thanos.

Bold> I am assuming you mean Darkseid as a movie's featured antagonist. If not, I would suggest watching 2017 and 2021's Justice League.

No. He has been featured as a mini-series main villain in a seven issue Justice League: The Darkseid War in 2015-2016 (link) but not in an ongoing short- or long-term series title dedicated strictly as his own. In contrast, Marvel has published three separate titles, all as Thanos:
  1. 18 issues (2016-2018 / link)
  2. 6 issues (2019 / link)
  3. 4 issues (2023 / link)

Would Darkseid be as popular big as Thanos was in MCU ..?
If done right? Sure, but I am not certain an adaptation could be simplified enough to appease general audiences. Zack Snyder's attempt was not on-point, but was close and was not done 'right' until he was able to do his version in 2021.

Darkseid, Apokolips, New Genius, The New Gods, etc., are all elements of a more complex backstory than Thanos'. Kevin Feige and Marvel's approach for Thanos was simplifying his one-sided relationship with the cosmic entity Death to an insane drive to balance the universe against starvation.

Would James Gunn and Warner Bros attempt something similar with Darkseid down the road? They could, but I doubt it. Of course, they could dumb down the character to a simple planet conqueror. On the other hand, they would have an alternative choice that more fits that definition in Mongul.

Kevin Feige Reveals Why Recent MCU Movies Flopped (Especially ‘The Marvels’) & He Can’t Be More Right

By Valentina Kraljik | Comic Basics
July 30, 2025

Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, recently opened up about why some of the recent MCU movies didn’t do as well as expected at the box office, especially The Marvels. The movie came out in November 2023 but only made about $206 million worldwide, which was disappointing for a Marvel film.

Other movies like Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts* also didn’t hit big numbers, making roughly $415 million and $382 million respectively.

Feige said he thinks the problem started with Marvel’s big push into Disney+ shows. Fans might have felt overwhelmed by all the new content, wondering if they needed to watch all those series before enjoying the movies.

He said, “It’s that expansion that I think led people to say, ‘Do I have to see all of these? It used to be fun, but now do I have to know everything about all of these?’ And I think The Marvels hit it hardest where people are like, ‘OK, I recognize her from a billion-dollar movie. But who are those other two? I guess they were in some TV show. I’ll skip it.’” Read more
This BS. It's because they sucked. They changed characters, way too many girl bosses, and had poorly written scripts and a lot of the times dislikable characters.

Okay, Here's My Fantsatic Four First Steps review ..at long last ... Enjoy ..

@DallasEast .. here's hoping my added spolier alerts works .. ;)

What I did Like :

- I especially like the first half of the film, it seemed like it had a decent pace, and it attempted to hit the ground running from the start, directly to the point of FF origin,
the display of their powers ..(both individual & as a group) as well as the Baxter Building.,..media coverage,..Yancy Street Gang, (albeit much younger gang mob)
..and spots of past FF enemies ( ala red Ghost, Mole Man, Puppet Master etc.)
And eventually to the introduction of FF robotic assistant “ Herbie “ , .. and finally, the very early surprise pregnancy announcement of Sue Richards
aka the Invisible Woman.

- One could easily tell this FF version was to be taken far more serious and direct than vs the previous director Tim Story’s two FF version.
BTW, I frankly thought the 2015 version was so awful & forgettable I cannot even remember it, much less mention it.

- As a big fan of comic book Norman Radd -Silver Surfer version, I wasn’t initially on board with a new Surfer in Shalla Bal female version. But the more she appeared,
the more she spoke, the more she finally grew on me. So I was able to adapt & accept that.

- I admired the acting performance of actress Vanessa Kirby as Susan Richards aka Invisible Woman, - I easily found her the most appealing, captivating
among the actors. Especially in related to her determination for the survival of her son Franklin Richard.

- Speaking of the infant son Franklin Richards –
I thought it was an interesting idea to make him the “ new “ focal point of the Invading Galactus,
who then imposed a demanding proposition... “Spare Planet Earth for the life of your child.”

- The Surfer /FF chase scene was easily the most appealing CGI element of the entire film. It also gave a display of some of the powers of the Surfer
– including familiar " phasing" thru solid objects at Warp Speed ,,and another thing I did like is that FF First Steps “ restored “ : the fact that the Surfer’s powers herself, .
.
are separated from the actual powers of her surfboard
. - unlike what Story’s FF version tried to do.

- The chase scene not only brought on the sudden physical birth of Franklin Richards, but it also displayed how suddenly determined and driven Galactus
was
- to physically seize the unborn Franklin from the womb of Sue Richards -
.. That was an intense, gripping moment.

- I was elated, (and much more appreciated) to see the CGI image of an actual Galactus,.. than vs what we disappointingly had to endure with director Tim Story’s
ridiculous ‘ cosmic cloud” from Rise-Surfer flick. And of course, the anticipated Galactus vs FF

- Though I thought it shouldve been made more powerful, and moving, I accepted Johnny Storm/Torch
anticipating the Surfer’s past of offering services to Galactus,
in exchanging for sparing her world
.

What I did NOT Like:

- What very quickly /very easily became my Biggest pet peeve of the film, and Monster Confusion was
.. NO MILITARY at all '??!! . Our Entire Planet to be Devoured and we have Zero Military Defense ? .. no law enforcement ?.. no city mayor ? .., no U.S. president ?,.. no United Nations- ? .. No world leaders ? ..Heck, I don’t even recall seeing one single police officer . No policeman escort for FF during press conferences and lynch mob of America ? .
. *This was utterly super awkward and made zero sense , it felt like the FF were in the B.C. prehistoric era, trather han a major city or continent.
So needless to say,
No hope or sighting of Surfer/Galactus vs US Army. battle. Heck at least we got Surfer vs military in Rise/Surfer !

- I didn’t think this FF film captured the ‘60’s era vibe enough, .. Why not make Sue Richard have the big hair 60’style like? I also thought they could’ve made more of an effort to implement looks, sights, sounds of the 60’s era , such as noticeable top 60’s songs of that era.

- I had major issues (and confusion) with Reed Richards strategies vs Galactus.
Such as the idea of planting man made barriers in the Earth’s ground, in an effort to move the entire Earths location away from Galactus.
. WTH ..!! – sorry, but It didn’t sound sensible, or realistic.
Wouldn’t it made much more sense to not only convince the Silver Surfer to
not only reveal Galactus ‘ weaknesses, but have her find the primary weapon
and use it against him ? (ala the Ultimate Nullifier )

- I was disappointed that this film chose Not to physically display the Origin moment FF were bombarded with Cosmic Rays ; it was just simply " voice" mentioned by Reed Richards.

- Upon both of their Earth’s arrival , I would have liked a better catastrophically entrance display by Surfer and Galactus, trembling buildings, earthquakes, storms. etc.
I also would have liked for director to display exactly how Galactus devours a world (since his Element Converter was not seen in film) .and how devoured planets look once he's " Ate " them. .

- Sorry but i liked the look of Surfer in Rise of Silver Surfer, more than i did Shalla Bal Surfer look. in First Step..

- Even before this FF First Steps, I didn’t think it was a good idea to have a CGI Ben Grimm/Thing .. and even both during/post- film, I still feel that same way as this Grimm-Thing just seemed too cartoonish and unreal, I simply could never connect with him. as real, and it chose not to empathize his self -guilt over his physical appearance.
Yet another Grimm Failing was no “ blind “ Alicia but instead an a mere average schoolteacher Rachel Rozman

- Another failing I thought was Herbie the robot, ..I couldn’t never understand what it was saying, his presence felt more like a mere useless washing machine. It Brought nothing to the film, imo.

- Overall I thought FF just had only two nice scenes,
1) the chase scene with Surfer
, and the final battle vs Galactus

- Hard to believe that there’s elements that I have to admit that even the mediocre Tim Story’s Rise of the Silver Surfer had advantages over this First Step FF ..
  1. I easily thought the fight between Human Torch vs Surfer in Rise/Surfer .. was Much Better than First Step version.
  2. I didn’t like or understand how Torch
can chase Surfer in outer space without suffering from lack of oxygen, much less, able to hold onto Surfer’s cosmic surf board.
  3. So Johnny Storm/Torch can figure out communication with Surfer , something legendary IQ Reed Richards could not do ..?

Conclusion: Overall , I thought Fantastic Four -First Steps had way too many holes, flaws and failings and much falling apart down the stretch. I was expecting a much more powerful film and delivery than what it turned out to be.
I really tried to like the heck outta of it like I hoped it would be -
I saw it as a slightly above average film, and easily forgettable once I departed the theater. It’s not a film I’m interested in seeing again anytime soon.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d give FF First Step ....a 5-5 .

Overall, I didn’t think Fantastic Four: First Steps was a better film than Superman... Not at all, Not even close, Imo. .

In fact, I only found FF to be just " slightly above average at best - And even that may be being generous.

I do not remember seeing it before.
Did my brain turn off?
Did anyone mention this before?
No
imaginable conversation involving MIster Miracle, Big Barda, etc. can be done without also considering a certain particular Big Bad...

i tend to get Mister Miracle and Docter Fate mixed up n DC Universe ... Admittedly i don't much about Miracle. and tying to recall him in Justice League animation series ..

I'm still awaitig DC creation call on Etrigan the Demon, and Solomon Grundy... .

Fate is a Lord of Order and unaffiliated with New Genesis. There may not be a better escape artist in DC than Miracle. I think he is even better than Batman in that regard.

I have nothing to go on, but it would not surprise me if James Gunn eventually features characters like Etrigan and Grundy in his current animated Creature Commandos series. And there is his future Swamp Thing movie to consider also. That character is supernaturally based. Those two would fit in naturally. Heck. Grundy was BORN in a swamp, lol.

James Gunn explains the procession of the current DCU. Should clear up any misunderstandings concerning everything released by Warner Bros Discovery BEFORE and AFTER Creature Commandos.
