Commanders (6th pick) to sit down with QB Russell

By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

PHOENIX -- It's not unusual that JaMarcus Russell, considered by many scouts to be the top prospect in this year's NFL draft, would visit with representatives from several franchises in the weeks leading up to the lottery.

What might be a bit unusual, however, is that the Washington Commanders are one of the teams that has arranged a visit with the former LSU quarterback.

Russell is scheduled to meet with Commanders coaches and officials on April 10 as part of his pre-draft tour of NFL franchises, ESPN.com has confirmed. But the Commanders already have a young quarterback in two-year veteran and former first-round choice Jason Campbell, and Campbell is expected to be their long-term starter.

That raises questions about the Washington brass' motive in arranging a visit with Russell.

The Commanders own the sixth overall selection in the first round and, during the NFL meetings here earlier this week, spoke with other teams about the possibilities of moving up or down from that slot. The Commanders have formally offered the pick to the Chicago Bears in exchange for two-time Pro Bowl linebacker Lance Briggs and the 31st overall pick.

The meeting with Russell might be little more than due diligence on the part of the Commanders, in the event he somehow falls to their spot. It may be a ruse meant to stir other teams to perhaps deal with Washington, which seems to want to move out of the No. 6 slot. Or, it could represent legitimate interest in Russell -- whose recent campus workout was impressive -- and possible unrest with Campbell.

Campbell, 25, started the final seven games of the 2006 season after not taking a single snap in his 2005 rookie campaign. The former Auburn standout completed 110 of 207 passes for 1,297 yards, with 10 touchdown passes, six interceptions, and a passer rating of 76.5. Washington's staff has lauded Campbell's long-term potential.

In 2005, the Commanders traded a package of three draft choices to Denver to acquire an extra first-round pick, the 25th overall in the draft, to choose Campbell, who was the SEC player of the year in 2004.

I know we seem to ask this exact same question every offseason but:

What in the hell are the Commanders doing?

I wonder if this will be like the Chargers and Giants did when Eli got drafted. The Raiders pick Russell and than a trade with the Commanders with some other picks thrown in....
I still cannot believe the Skins have any cap room to be able to do all of this even with all the restructuring.... ?

Just keeping their name in the news until the season starts then they get buried in the standing and are forgotten.

At least they are not overtly saying who they will take. I mean they made the deal to move up prior to the draft for Campbell and basically sent a bulletin to everyone in the league that he was who they were taking.

Are they gonna have a different rookie quarterback every season?
How do they expect one to learn the game and mature in their play?

I think they are just doing their due dillegence. They do have a top ten pick and you never know how the draft goes. Just in case he does drop to them, at least they have had him in and can see what kind of person he is.

I think most teams do that.

Seriously, Danny Snyder is out of his friggin' mind. I think the guys is truly going insane. Thank goodness he's ruining that franchise in the process.

Actually, I think he's a very smart man! If anyone can pull the wool over the eyes of his RedStinks fans, he does a damn good job!

He's running one of those "Jonestown" type deals....but the koolaid is not purple, it's red...

;)

I don't know why they're so averse to staying at #6

I can see wanting to trade down, but it looks like they just want out of #6, is there some kind of curse for players taken w/ the 6th overall selection that I don't know about?

The Midget don't like the price of high draft picks...

He don't want new stuff, he wants used up parts and try and make that car run...or horse, whatever...

The good thing about it is? They still won't get it right...

I'm glad the Boyz don't have that problem! :p:

Landry and Taylor would be quite a hyped duo. Landry would probably be good and Taylor would be the hype.

Snyder is a genius

He is going to have a team where JaMarcus Russell is handing off the ball to Adrian Peterson and throwing TD passes to Calvin Johnson. Meanwhile Lance Briggs will be the next Wilbur Marshall in DC

Sometimes I have no idea how he does it
