We've all laughed at the ridiculous, cockeyed optimism that always seems to characterize the posters over at Extremeskins, but tonight I think I got a deeper glimpse into the psychology of that breed...
I had to leave for work at halftime of the game, so I listened to the third quarter on the radio, along with my nephew, who is a Skins fan... the broadcasting team was Larry Michael, Sonny Jurgenson and Sam Huff, the latter two have been fixtures on that broadcast for YEARS...
I've talked about how comically bad that announce team is before, how profoundly homeristic their calling of a game is, and they were in rare form in this game... when the Bears TD was initially ruled an incompletion, they were laughing at the Bears for challenging the call, leaving the listener with the impression that the refs clearly got it right, and the Bears had just inexplicably wasted a time out...
Of course, the Bears won that challenge...
A short time later, Todd Collins dropped back to pass, and a flag flew in the backfield, and Sonny immediately declared it was roughing the passer... again, he left the listener with NO doubt that this was the call...
The call was holding on the Skins...
I found myself wondering why the Skins have kept such a totally incompetent team covering their games for so long, then I thought about ES, and it came to me-- the fans WANT a homer call of the game... to them, they're sittin' in a bar with Sonny and Sam, talking about the game as it's being played out, and what they want is a home team slant...
It's pretty much the same way on that message board, where seldom is heard a discouraging word, and when a discouraging word is heard, the poster is likely headed for a ban...
Now I know why Extremeskins is so wildly popular with Skins fans (it is easily the most active football board on the internet), their fan base has to be the most blindly homeristic, oblivious to reality base in all of football... sure, we have our fair share of homers in here, but NO team in the NFL has a more homeristic fan base than the Washington Commanders...
