Commanders licking wounds after Ravens game

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on August 23, 2010 11:52 AM ET
Donovan McNabb entered the Commanders locker room on Monday in a walking boot, a "precautionary" measure after the quarterback was banged around on Saturday against Baltimore.

McNabb sat on the sidelines in the second half of the game with ankle wrapped in ice.

Part of the reason McNabb got hit so much was the play of rookie tackle Trent Williams, who was repeatedly abused by Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs. Williams had his right arm wrapped on Monday after injuring his elbow. Williams hopes to practice this week, but his performance was a bigger concern than his injury.

The injuries to Williams and McNabb don't appear too serious, but safety Kareem Moore isn't as lucky. It's believed Moore could miss 4-6 weeks with a knee injury. His teammate Reed Doughty only confirmed that Moore, a projected starter at free safety, won't be out for the season.

The team signed veteran safety Tyrone Carter Monday according to Brad Biggs of NFP, indicating Moore will be out for a while. The Commanders have had a drama-filled camp because of Albert Haynesworth, but have been largely injury-free to this point.

That streak of luck ended on Saturday night against Baltimore.

I hope we turn the D loose against McNabb. Just bring it all night. I don't think they can protect him. Nothing but good things will happen for us.

I am sure Ware will be licking his chops to get a piece of Trent, Suggs is OK but Ware will eat his lunch, so who do you double Ware or Spencer.

I remember seeing headlines "Trent Williams can play" after the first preseason game. I also heard some proclaiming the Commanders are back!.

My how things change. Same with Brewster and the Cowboys, but just the opposite direction. Commanders when from Boom to Bust and Brewster went from Bust to Boom.

I will hold off judgment on both Brewster and the Williams/Commanders.

No way they leave Trent on an island with Ware. I think the Commanders wanted to see what he was really capable of against the Ravens. Suggs is a good player, but he doesn't have Ware's pass rush ability. Shanny would never leave him alone with Ware if only to save his QB from injury.

Ain't that a frickin shame:cry3: ...serves all their fans right for their remarks about our injured, karma is a ***** morons

From what little I saw of the game, Larry Johnson looks ridiculously washed up. Absolutely no burst or suddenness whatsoever.

And I would be extremely disappointed in Ware if he didn't get at least two sacks on Trent Williams.

.

Yeah, LJ looks done. I guess next week is Willie Parker's week?

I think I saw Mike Sellers got hurt. I don't know if he was expected to have a good role. He is 35 years old though.

One thing is for sure... Shanahan will have noticed how well San Diego's screens worked against Phillips aggressive pass rush.

We better get ready to see plenty of those plays.

Of course, McNabb and Portis/creaky old wife beater/ not-too fast Willie isn't quite as effective as Rivers/Sproles.

And the injury thing sucks for all teams.

Absolutley agree with you.

On 26 drop backs, McNabb was sacked once, and pressured (this being real good pressure) by Suggs 3 times, while Williams was blocking Suggs on an island.

The Shanahans would be fools to leave Williams on an island vs Ware in his first NFL regular season start on prime time. You remember that game in 2005 where Winston Justice gave up 7 sacks or something? Yea it would be the same thing.

There will be plenty of 2 TE sets (which we haven't seen yet) and plenty of moving pockets and roll outs.

the nfc east is getting banged up pretty good!

That sucks if you ask me.

Shanahan will run pretty much his typical offense. Lots of zone blocking runs...mostly to the left side...and have the QB keep booting. Then once they think the backside backer is going to bite, PA bootleg and pass. In part that's why they wanted McNabb because he has the ability to bootleg pretty well.

It's a good formula for offensive success because it keeps the backside defender off guard and prevents them from crashing down too hard and giving extra help against the run. And if you have a QB that's mobile and works better when they are not in the pocket, this is a good fix. Or if you have a Jake Plummer, the bootlegs make the reads easier for him. Problem is that I think it was great effective against the 4-3, but loses a bit of its luster in the 3-4 because the pass rushers in the 3-4 are in the 2 point stance and can adjust better if the bootleg does happen.

Funny thing, DMN is just reporting this a few days after we all knew about it.

Doubling up on that, why do the media outlets keep saying Sensy is out for the season opener when he says he'll be back in time for the opener and his rehab is going great?
