After watching the Washington Commanders unload a bundle of high-priced contracts Thursday, you wonder how team owner Dan Snyder would have functioned if there were a salary cap in 2010.

The Commanders dropped $63 million of dead salary cap pro-ration with the retirement of Chris Samuel and the releases of veterans Rock Cartwright, Todd Collins, Randy Thomas, Latrell Betts, Cornelius Griffin, Antwaan Randle-El and cornerback Fred Smoot. If there were a $123 million salary cap, the Commanders would have been $39 million over the cap after those transactions. For cash, the Commanders cut their payroll to $70.6 million, fourth-lowest in the league. Knowing Snyder, that number will grow.

Quiet times for restricted FAs Don't expect a lot of big action on the restricted free agent market. As expected, teams used leverage in deciding the draft-choice compensation if any team tried to steal their restricted free agent. A total of 130 of the 216 unrestricted free agents were given tenders in the second-round or higher levels. There were 26 first-rounder tenders and 20 tenders for first-and-thirds. It will be hard for a team to get a high-tendered player away from a team unless there is a trade worked out. Even though the owners are holding down salaries by not allowing players to hit the unrestricted free agent market unless they have six years of experience, the price of the 216 restricted free agents' salaries is $381 million.

This makes me nuts. Danny boy recieved a true gift with the CBA deal ending.

He played the system well, and banked on something like this happening (a good bet, since he's one of the ones making the decisions and one of the most wealthy and influential owners in the league) and it won him absolutely nothing.

So what's to be upset about?

Yup, yup and yup to all your points

Its clear this was planned out a few years ago, that the uncapped year would be used in this regard.

And it produced only one playoff berth since the last CBA was signed.

BTW- Caps vs Stars tonight. How conflicted are you? :)

I wouldn't worry too much.

I doubt his approach to personnel has changed much, if it has changed at all.

He'll dig another hole for himself shortly.

I'm going to that game tonight!

Should be a blast and I'm definitely rooting for the Caps.

From my experience, most Cowboys fans outside of Dallas have little-to-no allegiances to other Dallas-based teams. In fact, as a Spurs fan, I hate the Mavs.

Very true...I'm a Grizzlies fan for obvious reasons and when I used to watch baseball I was a Reds fan.

Oh trust me, I know, I like poking at Cowboy fans outside of Dallas with that :)

With that said, I almost want to throw up seeing you guys cheering for the Caps and several Ovechkin avatars on this website :lmao2:

I'll be up against the glass like I always am tonight at Verizon Center

I know, I've been a Caps fan with the rest of my family since I was a kid - and all my Skins fan uncles give me the same amount of crap for being a Cowboys fan. It is what it is - I can't change it now, and I wouldn't want to.

C-A-P-S CAPS CAPS CAPS!

Um, how does a player's salary end up dictating his talent level?

I don't understand how you could "poke" someone with that.

Is it supposed to be some kind of burn or insult?

I don't get it.

I don't get you, or anyone else, being a Hockey fan but especially a DC Hockey Fan.

Good grief man...that is a double whammy.

Its the bandwagon mentality. The Caps bandwagon has filled up, so I remind my Cowboy friends (who are very few, to be honest I don't personally know any Cowboy fans) of their bandwagon mentality.

I tend to cheer for all the teams in my hometown, and generally expected thats the way it works. I know of exceptions (grew up in Texas, dad was from there whatever) and in fact on ES we have a few Cowboy fans that post in the Caps threads, which is just plain bizzare to me.

But again, thats just me.

Although, I don't really mind as much considering 4 years ago Verizon Center was 1/3 full even though we had a gem of a player in Ovechkin. He was worth the price of admission alone.

lol...yeah...bandwagon - the Commanders fan only card.

It's also fun being a Wizards and White Sox fan. Some bandwagon.

The skins having the 4th lowest payroll just means their roster is terrible.

They have like the 4th or 5th worst roster talent in the NFL
