Commanders sign Sean Ryan

Posted by Michael David Smith on March 11, 2010 8:19 AM ET
In an off-season when many expected them to break the bank, the Washington Commanders have once again made a small-time free agent signing that demonstrates they're going to be fiscally conservative this year.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Washington has signed former Chiefs tight end Sean Ryan to a one-year contract.

As Schefter points out, in the first week of free agency the Commanders have now signed two players, Ryan and offensive lineman Artis Hicks. So much for Dan Snyder going hog wild in an uncapped year.

Ryan is a 29-year-old veteran who bounced around the league as a backup with the Cowboys, Jets, Dolphins, Saints and 49ers from 2004 to 2008. In 2009 he signed with the Chiefs and had his best season, starting eight games and catching 14 passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns.

Actually, I think the Commanders have signed 3 players in the first week of FA . . . . including the NT with the ACL injury from Carolina.

now they'll be screaming SB.

Why a tight end tho? i was told by Skin fans they have the bestest TE tandem in the WHOLE NFL and from Jumbo himself that there is only a microism of a difference between Cooley and Witten? And Davis has got to be better than anything Dallas has at TE? They told me so.

...a TE who can play the part of a small nimble lineman who understands zone blocking schemes.

He's not going to catch a lot of balls, but he will be asked to come in and block.

Did you see the Commanders just cut 10 players last week? You have to fill out a roster, and competition is a good thing on a 4-12 team

10 players were cut in total
Ladell Betts, Marcus Mason, Todd Collins, JD Skolnitzky (who?), Eddie Williams, Cornelius Griffin, Randy Thomas, Antwaan Randle El, Rock Cartwright, and Fred Smoot.

Were any of those guys a TE? I dont see how your "competition" stance is good if you are not filling the positions you release?

Even if they were, I was told by Skin fans "Davis and Cooley is the best TE tandem EVA" So i am assuming you dont need a TE.

There are 4 TE's on the roster now. If anything this is competition for Todd Yoder, the blocking TE.

Seeing that training camp rosters generally approach 85 players you bring in guys at all positions during the offseason

But you knew that. You are just being a ******* for no reason

No, you just get defensive if God forbid no one appeases the Skins nation or the fans by first screaming "THE SKINS ARE ALWAYS RIGHT"

Sorry not falling for it. How many TE's are you going to carry? Most likely you need the other positions filled, but their competition and as i said I was told by Skin fans "WE HAVE THE BEST TANDEM IN THE NFL"!!!!!! So technically you dont even have to carry 3.

ANd really, is Sean Ryan and the TE spot the competition you need filled right now? Thats the high priority? Your team is changing to a 3-4. I think you need other competition moreso than TE.

I was just being nice before, now you're just replying as a kid who got his blanket stolen instead of having a conversation.

I didnt say it was bad, but I dont feel its top priority and if you had to fill the position, it would probably be best to bring in some undrafted guys that can push Yoder. In fact I dont even see the need to push Yoder since the 3rd TE really isnt high on the signing list of most teams and if it is for competition, find it with a youth who might turn some eyes. Heck, you can probably draft late in the draft and get a guy to do better.

I have never seen so much breath wasted on a backup tight end signed to a 1 year deal :lmao2:

I mean seriously, chill out dude. Its only 1 week into the offseason and your head is exploding over the Commanders signing a backup TE to a 1 year deal

IM not exploding, i dont care what your organization does, but I thought we'd chat over it or something. And you went wild over the fact not every agrees with it.

Sorry, i didnt think the 3rd TE spot was that big a deal but I figured an undrafted rookie would have filled the spot better.
