Commanders snippet from Peter King

I saw this in Peter King's MMQ list of things he thinks he thinks:

"I think the second life of Joe Gibbs running the Commanders might not end well. Gibbs is 6-10, 10-6, 5-11 and now 5-5 in his four seasons in his second stint as Washington coach. A 26-32 regular-season record. One playoff win. Of the Commanders' final six games this year, five are against teams harboring playoff hopes. Gibbs turns 67 in six days. He doesn't answer the questions about how much longer he'll coach, but it won't be surprising to anyone at Commanders Park if this is it for him. I've gotten the sense that, regardless the outcome of this season, this is it for him.

If it is, there's a pretty big problem on the horizon for Washington. There is only one team with less than $5 million in 2008 cap room left as we stand right now, and that team, to no one's surprise, is Washington. It would be understandable if the 'Skins were a few bucks north or south of the $116-million cap figure for 2008, but the Commanders are miles away from that. They are $19.5 million OVER the 2008 cap as we sit here this morning. That means they're $25 million worse-off than any team in the NFL entering the offseason.

Some of this can be cosmetically addressed, like converting a sizable roster bonus due to tight end Chris Cooley in 2008, which would be payable all in 2008, to a signing bonus, which would pro-rate it over the life of his contract. That's fine, except all that does is continually push more and more financial obligation into the future. There's significant dead weight on this cap. If they choose to cut unimportant wideout Brandon Lloyd, that would cost them $7.1 million in cap charges on the '08 ledger.

Moral of the story: If Gibbs quits at season's end, would Bill Cowher, who'll likely want to make significant personnel changes wherever he goes to coach, want to go to a place where he's fighting 31 other teams plus the Commanders' bloated cap? (I think Cowher is likely to stay at CBS for another year anyway, but that's not set in stone.) The cap situation may contribute to owner Dan Snyder wanting to hire from within, with either Gregg Williams or Al Saunders. Williams is more likely if Snyder stays in-house."

I for one am going to be happy to see Portis dropped.

There's a good chance of that happening. I've always liked Portis, and I don't have anything against homosexuals whatsoever.

Commanders will never be in cap hell. Our FO is too smart for that. Every year, some bozo predicts Commanders are in cap hell. But we sure as hell know how to get around it.

If there's anything the Commanders front office is NOT, it's "too smart."

all you guys do is push money back, so every year you have to go and do it all over again

but you are smart in that you are taking advantage of the cap going up every year

I lost alot of respect for gibbs yesterday, more and more he is slipping in my eyes.

He let his team go out to the middle of the star after warmups as a team and jump up and down on the star and point and all the other nonsense.

That is supposed to be a penalty and it wasnt called. Total disrespect.

I wish someone would bring that up to that whiny baby and see what he has to say.

You have the worst front office in the league. Sorry to inform you but vinny cerrato has no credentials to be in the position he is in not to mention he is awful at it.

I think Gibbs will be done as well. Its obviously been a totally different ride then anyone expected. No doubt it has taken a toll on him and he has some things with his personal life that are more important then football. His grandchild having cancer is just an awful story and it has to weigh on him every single day.

I think he will bow out and go back to hanging around the racetrack. Its far less involved then coaching and would allow him to be with his family.

I really hate to agree, even in part, with a 'skins fan but yeah, every year for the last 6 or 7 years people have been predicting cap hell for them.
And it never seems to have any affect on them signing players, does it?
I'd be more worried about them signing the right players and coaches, though. But I just don't think as long as Danny boy is running the team they will ever get it right.
As long as Danny boy owns the team the rest of the league has little to fear from the 'skins on the field.
He is pretty much the equivalent of an Alzheimer ravaged Al Davis except Danny boy is 40 years younger than Al. So the 'skins can only look forward to it getting better over the years, hahahaha.
Of course, you can always hope for a players strike next year so old Joe can stick around for one more year and dominate.

No you are in Cap Hell. Most disturbing is the fact you don't understand that. Just like Dannyboy

Cap Hell: n. 1. mis-management of the salary cap in the NFL by signing of mediocre free agents to big contracts with big signing bonuses, while on the surface the team seems to fit but when injuries happen the shell game starts to cover the holes in the depth of the team because it has no money for depth or squanders draft picks on stupid trades. Whats most ironic is that you know little Danny would have fired anyone else by now. Remember, he gave Joe a 5% ownership in the team (which is worth a ton mind you).

Having the worst depth in the NFL is a result of "cap hell". You can only afford to pay your backups and role players minimum.
