OUCH!

Just 4 days into the Commanders season, we already have our first DEFCON 1 controversy.

Why exactly, did Shawn Springs NOT start last weekend against Miami? The answer, as has been typical in the Snyder-Gibbs era, is simply lies and vengeance.

Snyder exacts the revenge, and Gibbs is pushed out in front of the mics to lie about it.

If you ever thought that somehow Gibbs would “tame” Danny in a football sense, reel him in, wall him off, you are wrong. Dead wrong.
Dan Snyder continues to play God with his football team on a daily basis. He loves it. He lives it. And that will never change.

If you cross Snyder as a Commander player, you will feel the wrath.
See Coles, Laveranues and the “flat screen TV.”
See Arrington, Lavar and the “he plays out of position” excuse.
Now, it’s Springs’ turn to feel the wrath. Why? He dared to know his true value, and to refuse a pay cut in the off-season. Springs didn’t re-work his contract as the team asked, putting them in a mild salary cap bind.
And believe me, Snyder hasn’t forgotten.

There’s no other rational explanation for Springs being left off the field for big chunks on Sunday as Fred Smoot turned a golden brown by various Dolphin receivers who found generous 10 yard cushions at the line of scrimmage.

Springs was as healthy as he’s ever been as a Commander. He practiced fully all week. He did not appear at all on the injury report.

And yet, here came Saint Joe to lie to the congregation at the Monday press conference.

“We were kind of worried a little the week before about him from a health standpoint,” Gibbs said in his best liar’s poker voice. “Certainly, I am sure he will start this year but we feel like we’re real solid at corner and we’ve got three guys there who have started a bunch.”
Sure.

Smoot was benched in Minnesota last year and gladly released from one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL.

Springs meanwhile has a $5 million cap number, and his absence was widely, and consistently mentioned as the reason why the Skins D had bottomed out last season.

Sure, “we’ve got three solid guys”. Go lie to somebody else Joe. This is not 1984. The sports media marketplace has changed. Fans and media know way more, and everything is scrutinized. You don’t have the Lombardi trophies to hide behind this go ‘round.

I had said before that Gibbs seemed delusional at times about certain things happening to, and around, his football team. I had even dubbed him “Corrado Gibbs” for his sometimes Uncle Junior-like disconnect from reality.
But I never felt that he was lying in a direct, and cynical sense. I always thought that it was just Joe’s desperate “coping mechanism” in order to cushion the disappointment of his comeback record.

No more. The jig is up. He’s just a liar. And a bad one at that.
Remember the “Archuleta hasn’t been benched, he’s out there in ‘packages’ comments” from last year? Good times.

Said Springs: “I felt better going into that game Sunday than I have in four years. I don’t know what Gibbs is talking about.”
To quote Steve Buckhantz: “Dagger!”

Why would Gibbs stoop to such levels just to carry out a Danny grudge? Because Joe’s massive salary and racing team success requires it. He’s not stupid, Gibbs. He’s just compromising a little bit of his coaching integrity. It happens all the time. Many of us just thought that Saint Joe was beyond such hard cold financial calculations.

We were duped.

But hey, on the bright side, Gibbs’ racing team has never been stronger. The #11 FedEx car was made possible by this return to NFL coaching and the wonderful corporate suite synergies at FedEx Field. Kyle Busch is coming on next year, and Toyota has backed up their Tundra truck full of cash for Gibbs to switch makers for next year.
Life is good. Relax. We may even win a few football games this year, if that matters to anybody.

I don't give six shakes of a stick about Snyder or his band of wussy whine bags with a racial moniker. All I care about is that they lose and lose often.

I don't get it-Why didn't they release Springs last offseason when he was due a bonus?

So Snyder paid him, but nonetheless wanted revenge on him b/c he didn't want to take a pay cut, but gave him his money anyways, and got his revenge?

This doesn't make any sense.

there is a long thread on ES about this. I found these comments on the first page and thought they were funny. I am sure there are a lot more. I think Czaben is funny but it is schtick. Sort of like the Ticket guys.

Mojobo:
Joe Gibbs is the one man who could slap me across the face and I would respond with "thank you may I have another" so whatever he feels is necessary to do I will fully agree. For some reason Czabe and also B-Mitch don't understand how much we respect Gibbs win or lose not only for his coaching but his great character he shows and anything bad said about Coach Gibbs will be taken personally. If they don't want to accept that they should find another team to comment on.

Shawn Springs dad was a Cowboy. I'd take him if they want to waive him. He can come home and take care of his Pops.

The Dysfunctional Relationship between the Post and the Commanders

By Harry Jaffe
Where's Dan, where's Vinny? They're not there.

After covering the Washington Commanders for two seasons, Howard Bryant has one word for the relationship between the team and the Washington Post: “dysfunctional.”
Says Bryant: “With the exception of Joe Gibbs, it’s difficult to get a straight answer out of anybody in the front office. Dan Snyder is in the locker room, yet he’s never available for comment.”
One on one with Snyder?
“Never,” he says. “They do give interviews, just not to us. All the powwows and summits and lunches we tried to have, from the day-to-day standpoint, they didn’t pay off.”
The Commanders and the Post have been feuding since Snyder reacted angrily to what he saw as negative coverage, and the team yanked hundreds of the Post’s season tickets. Snyder invited Post editors to his mansion for a peace conference, but it only inflamed tensions.
“The Commander players and the coaches were open and helpful,” Bryant says. “The locker room was the best I’ve ever covered. The front office was closed.”
Commanders spokesman Karl Swanson doesn’t see the problem: “Gibbs is the team president and is the voice and face of the team.”
Bryant is headed to ESPN, where he’ll write for its magazine and appear on TV. He’s also writing a biography of Hank Aaron.
Bryant says the Commanders’ relationship with the Post isn’t that different from the way it treats most reporters attempting to cover the team. He has covered the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and Oakland A’s. In every case, the front offices were more open and available to reporters.
“It’s the most contentious relationship with any team I’ve covered,” Bryant says. “There are no bouquets in either direction.”
He adds: “I think the Post realizes the best way to cover the Commanders is without the illusion of détente. It makes for better coverage, anyway.”
Indeed—much better than the cozy relationship the Post seemed to have with the Commanders for many years.

I like Springs. He strengthened that defense when he signed with them. I would love to have him.

His thrown to/passes not completed % was actually BETTER than Champ Bailey's, believe it or not.
