Never too early to think about comp picks for next year. We're slated to receive a 4th for Hitchens which is nice. Outside of that, it's a bit murky.

The other players who could net picks are:

Kony Ealy - he seems good as gone for me; likely he nets a 7th rounder
Cameron Fleming - expect nothing here as he'll make the 53
Deonte Thompson - likely to make the roster; cutting him would get us a 7th rounder

The only true question here seems to be if Thompson is worth more than a 7th rounder to us when looking at our WR depth.

Cut players don't count for the compensatory formula, only FAs who played through their contracts.. The only pick we're projected to get is the 4th for HItchens. Our breakdown is as follows:

Hitchens - 4th
Jonathan Cooper - 6th - Offset by Cam Fleming
Kyle Wilbur - 7th - Offset by Kony Ealy
Brice Butler - 7th - Offset by Deonte Thompson

If you cut someone, there is no compensation

Having two 4th rounders next year will be nice. So basically we came out exactly even by getting a 4th rounder back from an original 4th round pick. NICE.

That is not how it works.

Comp picks are for players that become free agents when their contract expires.

This is about what I have also.
But there are a few other players involved too, but can't remember if we signed them or they signed ours as FA's / cut list

I had we signed 6, lost 6, but I think one of our 6 we signed was cut and not a FA.

We lost
Hitchens, Cooper, Wilber, Butler, Benewikere. And Keith Smith, but since he was a RFA and not tendered, he does not count. So he reduces my list to 5. I just now realized that.

We signed
Fleming, Ealy, Thompson, Martin, Hurns and Thomas. But were any of these players released, can't remember.

So actually we may not even get a comp pick for Hitchens if that is the case. Does Martin count if he is on IR.

And the players new contract with the new team needs to be over a certain amount a year, around the $1 million per year level.
So a contract worth $900,000 a year does not count in the formula.

It would be funny if it did work as the OP thought.

Teams would sign scrubs to massive non-guaranteed contracts then cut them and rake in the comp picks...

oh man, Bellicheck would exploit that, then turn the comp picks into 1st rounders somehow.

The OP is essentially correct.

No, you don't "get" a comp pick for cutting someone ... but cutting them removes them from the equation as players gained.

Right now, we lost four qualifying players and gained three, which is why we could get one comp pick for Hitchens.

If we cut Ealy and Thompson, though, we will have lost four qualifying players and gained one, so we could get three comp picks.

If we cut Ealy and keep Thompson and Flemming, for example, it would be four lost and two gained, so we could get comp picks for Hitchens and Cooper.

We might get one for D Irving CBeasley, TAustin, Fleming and BJones as well, maybe DWison

Ealy, Thompson and Olawale would be long shots at this junture but it is so far away

Yes, in reverse.
Cuts effect your gained total but not your losses.
Since we are keeping Fleming I'd expect the return to just be for Hitchens and at an R4.
Think the lower tier guys will fall below the line but we can hope for an R7

Yes, they do. If Hitchens, Cooper, Wilber or Butler gets cut by their new team, it affects the losses in our comp equation.

Benewirke (lost) and Martin (gained) are projected to fall below the qualifying line, but everyone else is currently projected to count in the equation.

I don’t think we get comp picks for players we cut. If we cut ealy or Thompson, we get nothing
Yes we do, they no longer count against us in the comp formula, therefor the comp pick they negated is back in play.

Likewise if Kyle Wilbur is cut, and we dont cut Ealy or Thompson, we lose our 4th or 5th round comp for Hitchens. Neither of those players are worth a 4th or 5th.

Thanks for the clarification. Good to see you posting Adam.
