Comp Picks

It was part of the deal when they allowed UFA after 4 years for everyone but 1st rounders

I do think they should stop pretending and just say the Draft is 8 rounds

A 5th round Comp(#178) is essentially a late 6th
A regular late 7th(220) becomes a mid 8th(244)

Interesting point about comp picks eroding the value of regular picks.

Seems like robbery to get a pick for Benwikere. This is one thing I like about management. Their free agent strategy clearly is largely built around comp pick farming.
That's actually something I don't like, it encourages a team not to sign or find replacements during FA. The comp pick strategy is cop out for a FO not being able to assess or sign effective FAs or successful trades.

Seeing as the Cowboys traded a sixth to the Bengals in 2017 to get Benwikere, who played special teams for 12 games, I see getting a comp pick back for him as a fair return.

Plus, who would've predicted he would emerge as a starter in Arizona (or wherever he is now)?

Cop out or not, it's netting us picks.

It's netting us a pick in the future and that's a positive thing, but it also means that we have one less player that is contributing and actually helping the team today. We're not playing games to win in the offseason, we should be doing a better job in acquiring players in the offseason to win actual games.

As far as I can see the best we can get for BeneB is a 7th and that is solely based on his playing time

He worked himself into a qualifying position by playing a lot in almost every game so far for ARI

It is ironic considering we wasted a 6th on him when we could have deactivated him for a certain number games but played him for a handful of ST snaps anyways

So in essence trading a 1st for ACooper allowed us to get back a 4th and 7th since we could waive DThompson instead of hoping to get a pick based on BeneB continued starting
Yeah, I've covered the Benwikere inactive frustration a couple times before.

It's not either or. We try to get guys that are useful, but among them, we target guys who will net us a pick.

Some people just want to spend more in free agency. Then you have to talk about which of our guys you don't want to sign. Lots of guys coming up for their first free agent contracts. Too many to sign. So many people had a cow when we let Hitchens go. Lots of better players to worry about signing soon.

Build through the draft. Sign from your own guys in free agency. Otherwise, free agency is about value and churning comp picks.

You're in a much better position to evaluate players if they've played for you for years than if they're from other teams. I'd rather be signing from that pool.

It's not about spending more in FA, it's about spending wisely. The first WR we signed in FA was Thompson. That was a bad decision from the get go, he was a journeyman WR that never made an impact in the NFL. Last year he was let go from the Bills and Bears and each had among if not the worst WR corps in the league and couldn't stick with either. Hurns is a jag, getting $12 million over 2 years. After coming off a great 2016, our big FA signings were Carroll and Paea, both were horrible and didn't even make it thru the season. The FO does not do a good job of assessing talent in FA and Comp picks just bail out the poor decisions. I would rather them make better FA assessments that will help the team during the current season, than get a pick next year might or might not eventually pan out.

I agree. Just make the draft 8 rounds. If a team decides not to re-sign one of their guys then that’s on them and they shouldn’t be compensated for it. Comp picks were a good idea back when free agency started and nobody was accustomed to losing players. The comp pick softened the blow but they aren’t necessary anymore.

Plus, comp picks just hurt everybody elses draft position. Don't punish me for signing my own players by letting other teams cut in line.

I think that played a small part in the decision to trade for Cooper.

There were many smaller issues that were on the Pro trade side of that decision.

They get a big discount for 9 games this season as compared to signing a free agent like Watkins for 18M.

They get bit more of a discount next year with Cooper at 14M vs Watkins at 18M.

The traded for Ben B because we had way too many injuries in the secondary at the time. It wasn't like they did it just to do it. He was an insurance policy for depth basically.
He was inactive for a few games, maybe even 4 games. Then another injury, and they had to play him. At the time he was worth the 6th round chance. Our 6th rounders this last draft brought us nothing. So if we basically swap a 6th for a 7th, no harm.

He made 2 tackles for us last year...... hardly worth a 6th

Remember waaaay back then in October when we signed Butler back and the thinking was he had this great chemistry with Dak and would stretch the field? I don't believe he played a single snap in his short tenure...

Think it was two. I would take him over Hurns as the #4 but what do I know?
