DALLAS (AP) – A company partly owned by Tony Romo sued the NFL on Tuesday over a canceled fantasy football event in Las Vegas that was to involve the Dallas quarterback and other star players.
The Fan Expo LLC alleged in a lawsuit filed in Dallas County that the league intimidated players with threats of fines and suspensions if they attended what the NFL said was a gambling-related event because it was to be held at a facility associated with a casino.
The Texas-based company claims the NFL initially approved the event, set for mid-July, by allowing some members of league-owned media outlets to participate. Then in June, according to the lawsuit, players and in some cases family members of players were told they could be disciplined if they showed up.
"This case is about the NFL's blatant and premeditated sabotage of an event designed to bring together the very people who are the backbone of the NFL — the players and the fans," said the lawsuit, which seeks more than $1 million in damages.
NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said the league was reviewing the lawsuit and would "respond accordingly."
The Fan Expo created the National Fantasy Football Convention and used Romo as its headliner while getting commitments from Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant, New England tight end Rob Gronkowski and Pittsburgh running back Le'Veon Bell.

Am I the only one who has no clue what the hell Romo's fantasy football event is? I'm guessing it's just a big fantasy football league with a bunch of NFL players organized by Tony. But why is it such a problem... and how can the NFL even have the power to cancel it?? Can they also cancel Tony Romo's daughter's birthday party if they wanted? I mean what the hell. I don't get it.
The NFL was cut out of the $$$$ generated.
So no go.... Pay off big Roger and it's no problem.

Hoping this turns into a funny debate thread with internet lawyers telling other internet lawyers why the other is wrong and they are right concerning how the trial will go.

Don't get the point of fantasy football unless it's for money. It's by no means any fun at all.

Kind of off topic, but has anyone else noticed how the NFL is losing fan support in just about every issue that has come up the last year or so? As an example, I think Brady cheated (no, this isn't a post to start that debate again, just using it as an example), but I'd love to see the NFL get shot down in court just because I have a strong disdain for Goodell and the NFL league offices, in general. To me, they have taken on the persona of big bully on the block. I want them to lose. What I'm leading up to is this: When the current CBA comes to an end (5 years?), will the owners have lost fan support to the extent that it will affect their ability to hold a hard line. I know that in the past, I've been pretty much against the players in thinking that they're asking for too much. I've had the attitude that if the CBA wasn't signed, it was the players' fault. I'll tell you right now, I'm so fed up with King Roger and the NFL front office that I'm to the point that Iwouldn't care if we lost a season due to the players holding out. I just want the bully (Roger) to get his *** kicked. OK, rant over.

You must not be doing it with the right group of friends. Me and my friends have a twelve team league in our neighborhood and it contains a ton of smack talk, Sunday Barbeques and a few live games per year. WWE style belt for the winner and a toilet trophy for the worst record. It is an absolute blast.

As to the CBA, we are into year five now, of a ten year deal. I have been comparing back to the start of our offensive line beginning the year the new deal went into effect.

Our left tackle, Smith, started the Cowboy's count at that point.

But from a player's point of view, repercussions from player injury and suffering had it's first real day in court, and player's health and welfare was the winner. The sums going towards injured players is actually pretty significant by today's standards.

Then there is a stabilized spending required by the new contract, and player contracts have elevated accordingly. Caps have to now be functional at paying a team's players.

Mix the league's picture of paying individual team players, with contract increases from media deals coming into effect this next season...well, and players are in a completely different financial picture from just five seasons ago...as is their health issues being addressed now.

I can't stand the sense of privileges and not sense of common justice being an element of the NFL. But as that goes, and to the league's credit, it attempted to address violence in it's players and open window to the public, on a strong level. Harshly.

Now many of those efforts have been reduced already by the courts...we live in the United States. But it sent a strong message towards player ethics as the changes started to reflect in today's NFL as well. (from the new CBA)

The growth is two fold, and in the arena of player conduct and player rewards.

Although, and I agree, Goodell has been challenged as to his own Code of Conduct, the view of the NFL will grow with the degree of interest in a very competitive and strong league.

Fans will just focus on the fun and excitement of the NFL, and forget the degree of authority that also was a degree of the picture when things started to change.

But this fan has to also focus on the improving NFL, and appreciate the tough trail traveled.

Hey, I love Jerry and his Cowboys...and that has grown through the toils, not become a starch in my boxers.

Burma, I have to agree on the numbers against Dallas as opposed to helping out our Cowboys.

But the team is getting tougher every day now.

For me, there has just been far too much of the league office playing God. You're probably right in that the NFLPA won't hold Goodell and his cronies accountable for a lot, but that doesn't stop me from wishing they would. Player appeals are a joke. Goodell hands down a sentence and if a player appeals, then Goodell or his hand picked "arbitrator" hears the appeal. Granted, the players agreed to that in the CBA, but still... Another recent instance of league bullying occurred when the league shut down the Fantasy Football Conference that Romo was a part of because it violated the league's stance on gambling. Give me a break. They shut it down because they weren't getting a piece of the action. Again, you're probably right, though...the players are raking in some nice money for playing a game, so they probably won't rush to upset the apple cart.

On the fantasy setting, I think the league has been unofficially attempting regain dominance of control concerning cash flows reflected by that NFL, and this is a cow already out of the barn attempt to remedy perceptions of remedy with an unjust cause.

Yeah they should have sued for more. A LOT MORE. Rub the NFL's noses in it.

The NFL needs to be sued over this one. I agree with Jarv above. I would have sued for much, much more.

The primary reason for the lawsuit could be to force the issue to be defined for the future. They are planning to have another one next year. By forcing the issue in court, they can force the boundaries to be defined in terms of what they can or can't do in the future which would prevent the NFL from forcing them to cancel it again for some trumped up reasons.

I have no doubt that the NFLPA will be more adamant about players rights in regards to the punishment process and the appeals process in the next CBA negotations, but that is a ways away.

The NFLPA really should threaten a boycott now and try to force the appeals to go to a truly neutral forum. The current appeals process is definitely not an independent and neutral process.
