Comparing our trade and the Rams

I was listening to talking cowboys, and it seems like people love to make patently absurd comparisons.

So he is complaining about the Rams getting a 3rd and 6th for dropping down from 22 to 30.

We dropped from 18 to 31 (slightly larger drop so we should get a better value than the rams).

The Rams got a 3rd and 6th and we only got a 3rd right?

That's a false equivalence. Was our 3rd rounder equal to theirs?

We got the 12th pick in the 3rd round, and the Rams got the 30th pick in the 3rd round.

Imagine if the Cowboys traded down from that 12th pick to 30th and only picked up a 6th round draft pick... heads would have rolled. That's basically a 4th round draft pick.

I think this is a pretty important point many have missed. Heck, I missed it at first. We all pick apart the first round, saying "TOP 10 pick" or "We are the 18th pick". But as the rounds progress, it seems that many will just clump the picks together as just rounds.

Taking the "round" out of it We gave up the 18th for the 31st and the 74th.
The Rams gave up 22 for 30, 92 and 198.

There's a big difference between 74 and 92.

Just wondering, did they compare our trade to the one Oakland made with Miami, where they dropped from 3 to 12 and only got a 2nd? According to all-important trade chart, Oakland got hosed to the tune of some 500 points. And that was the first trade of the night, which set a very low bar for the market for teams looking to trade up. The only trade in the first round where the team trading down got even value was STL, and that was barely. Everyone else took less to trade down. The market over the last three years just doesn't follow that chart anymore.

Even if the Cowboys would have gotten 61 from the 49ers instead of 74, the pick would still have likely been Terrance Williams. They said he was ranked in the twenties on their board.

It might have been Williams, but there's also a pretty good chance it would have been Bennie Logan. Word was that we liked him quite a bit. Just throwing that out there as part something to add to the mix 3 years from now when we can review this whole thing.

People just like to be mad at Jerry. I don't like Mickey Spagnola but he made a valid point. Are people roasting the Giants and Bears for drafting linemen early? No they aren't. It's just the Cowboys. People love to hate the Cowboys, even their own fans.

If we sit at 18 at draft Reid, we would have been roasted for it. The 49ers not only take reid at 18, but they traded their 3rd round draft pick to do it.

A 1st and a 3rd for Eric Reid?

Can't believe the Bears took Long in the 1st. To me that's 10x worse than anything Dallas did during the draft, but I've seen exactly one article questioning the logic.

For the record, they are apparently flipping out in Chicago. Locally, they are getting roasted, but it just doesn't get national attention because it's not the Cowboys.

I'm surprised there aren't more up in arms here in NY since Pugh at 19 was clearly not getting the "value" they should have gotten. Pugh is just as much of a reach as Franklin was... We did get Williams in addition to that, so we did better than them :)

It's such a big deal because its incredibly easy for espn and others to get the cowboy lemmings to go over the cliff with just about anything.

Th deal was done pre-draft based on the players available, the value wasn't really any worse than other teams trades but some think the 9ers would have given more. Harbaugh is a different animal.

Find a new reason for taking the easy way out.

Using the trade value chart that the rest of the free world uses outside of our War room. Rams traded #22 worth 780pts for 30, 92 and 198 totaling 764 points. We traded 18 worth 900 pts for 31 and 74 worth 820 points, so yes the rams did a much better job than we did.

But on our mythical super secret revised chart we "won"

That "mythical" chart does exist in several variations and it's well documented the Cowboys did indeed get good value according to those charts.

Everybody on Talking Cowboys seem to think we got schooled.

The rams trade is dead on by the most updated charts based on real trades over the last 5 years.

Ours is not.
