Agreed about the pressure from the middle.

And I am talking about push. Not Hatcher running a stunt.

That interior pressure also helps a sad safety group.

Exactly...they must push the pocket back and make the QB hold the ball an extra second or two so the ends can get there...sacks from the DTs are gravy to me....

Sacks and pressure from the 3 tech will be critical from this defense, defensive ends important too but not as critical. If Cowboys do not get pressure immediately from the D players closest to the QB (DTs) then Cowboys will be in a load of hurt. One gapping applies pressure but at a cost.

Mix in the second level, linebackers, also attacking and not easy targets, and that can be used to halt drives. Not always, but much more frequently than last year.

Your post was good insight, although...

Back to the defensive line, there was a moment during a drill in which a defensive assistant reminded Martez WIlson, "It's a two-way go, 'tez, a two-way go." Wilson was playing the right defensive end position at the time, and it got me wondering whether the Cowboys might be taking a page out of Seattle's defensive playbook. The Seahawks, you will recall, play a similar style 4-3, but with an interesting twist: they often give two of their D-linemen - strongside end Red Bryant and NT Brandon Mebane- two-gap responsibility. Seeing the coaches tell an RDE to "two-way" makes me wonder if the Cowboys won't try something similar.

Things such as this will help out the linebackers as well.

The reason our D sucked was a lack of pass rush and and poor safety play. Rod got the most out of what he had.

the tampa2 is predicated on good pass rush specially up the middle. which is to say exactly what you said, a good pass rush, specially from the DL. in tampa2, if the QB has too much time, the recievers can easily find open spaces they can sit in and collect passes all day. that's what happened last year.
plus you need a good safety with range, which probably explains why we wanted Wilcox.

Actually, from my observations watching all 22, the defenders were very slow to react and bit on play action way too much. Guys were open almost immediately, due to the defenders not being in position.

If Cowboys are making Martez Wilson 2 gap then we are in a ton of trouble. Wilson is big (6'4 260) and fast (4.49) but he is not physical and is contact averse. His high tackle numbers his last season in Illinois belie the truth somewhat because he is not a thumper but a drag down tackler who prefers to run around OL and make himself skinny through creases instead of bulldozing people with his size. Kid has speed, lots of it, but he is not real flexible so not sure how well he will be able to bend around the edges or toughness to power over an OT.

It may be better to make him lose a few lbs and let him play SAM, the position he actually prefers to play. He is not very instinctive and his ability to read run/pass is not great so is slow to drop into coverage at times, but his speed allows him to recover and he pass rushes better when he is standing up and hiding behind a DL. Just my 2 cents.

Sounds like a WDE but they do like to cover the LBers.

For all the talk of Claiborne and Carr's struggles being around not playing as press man coverage corners it sure seems as those struggles are likely to reappear in 2014.

Claiborne got beat pretty bad against the Eagles his rookie year but he played pretty well last year. Carr was the one getting torched while Claiborne repeatedly had to leave due to injury.

I think pressure from the 3 will create sacks for everyone esp the DEs as the QB has to leave the pocket. You need pressure from everywhere along the DL if you want elite pressure.

We're going to be blitzing the WIL more this year, too.

As much as I don't like how unproven or unremarkable our defensive personnel are, I have to say, I'm excited at the prospect of watching the scheme work. I love the press coverage and think we've at least got several athletic Ss. We've got options on the DL, and I think we're going to bring Carter and Scandrick and Wilcox more if we can't get the pressure up front. Should be fun to watch. Lots of big plays, both ways.

If we get enough pressure via the DL then they can take chances with the LBers and DBs coming.

I'm going off McClay saying they were looking at Shazier in the draft to generate a rush after Barr and Donald both went.

Ware rarely ever set the edge against the run last season. They allowed him to either crash inside or rush wide with no regards for run contain. I guess it's possible that they teach all players all of the techniques, but I doubt if they would ever have Wilson 2-gap in a game. Last season when they wanted strong run defense at the WDE spot, they would put a guy like Wynn (6-3,285) there.

I think Wilson proved that he doesn't have the mental ability to play LB. They tried him as 3-4 OLB in NO and then Oakland tried him as a 4-3 LB. Playing WDE in Marinelli's scheme requires a minimal amount of "thinking" and is probably his last chance to make it in the NFL.

There were reports that he looked terrific in the drills in TC.
