I'm not saying that Bill & Jerry have to treat this roster like a fantasy football team. I'm not saying they have to sign the biggest names in free agency. But they DO have to go out and attempt to improve a team with several obvious weaknesses.
Another posted started a thread saying, "Look, the Steelers didn't spend like crazy in free agency, we must be doing something right!"
That's all I have to say about that. LOL With the exception of Deion Sanders, those 90's Super Bowl Cowboys weren't exactly movers and shakers in free agency either, were they?
Most of you were back on the board at the beginning of the 2004 season. You remember how it was. It was exactly like this. Half the board was pissed at Bill & Jerry for standing pat and not signing anyone that we couldn't find equivalent skills through a mid-round draft pick, and the other half was busy defending Bill & Jerry to their dying breath. Turns out the chicken littles were spot on in 2004.
So how about we compare the Cowboys brief free agency activity to the other bubble teams? Forget the Colts, the Pats, the Steelers and other teams that have recently won 12 games or gone far in the Playoffs. How about the bubble teams?
The teams that surprised everyone this year as Playoff contenders....
The teams that are close to .500.....
The teams that were pushed out of the Playoffs early.....
Here's a quick summary:
Signed Randle El, Brandon Lloyd, Fauria & Archuleta, aiming for John Abraham
.... So the Skins have basically eliminated any problems they had with teams gunning for Santana Moss with 2 highly underrated receivers, they have more depth in the secondary, and they are trying to earn a highly needed pass rusher, what more can you say? This is a team that intends to last long in the Playoffs on its second go-around.
Signed Steve Hutchinson, Longwell, Chester Tayor, Leber, & re-signed Koren Robinson
.... They just added maybe the best guard in the league to a line that already has some talented players for the same salary washed up Larry Allen earns. They got one of the best kickers in the league during an age of pairty when 1 or 2 points means more than ever, and this time he's indoors! Depth on defense, and this a team that intends on making the Playoffs this year and not getting kicked out near the last week.
Maybe the favorite for Drew Brees
.... He's their's to lose now. The Saints and Chargers blew it with their offers. The Fins are about to fix their biggest weakness last year. They have a great receiver, a good tight end, a running game, a defense, could use some help on that line, but it's nice to not have a carousel of overglorified backup QBs. Let the Nick Saban reversal come full circle. They'll be in the Playoffs with 2 extra wins from starting Brees.
Probably the favorite for Terrell Owens upon his release
.... So ya got me! A team in cap trouble. Most likely because they've been trying to fix that defense for years now. Only a few million left. You saw that game against the Chiefs. They flat out RAN all over us. I just wish we could have the same cap problems because our overpaid linemen were actually producing. Add TO to that offense and it could be pretty darn scary and push them back to the Playoff favorite they were a few years ago.
Signed Sam Madison, LaVar Arrington on their radar
.... All Cowboys fans know: That was already a damn good defense. So they just added two guys who not too long ago were top 5 at their position. If they can get some good production out of those players, fohgetaboutit! On offense, they're only going to get better as Eli matures. (Insert obligatory Henson should have started in 2004 comments. ) No early Playoff exits for this team if free agency works out.
Courting Brad Hopkins
.... So there we have it. A bubble team with about as much movement as the Boys. Only problem is they were in the NFC Championship the season before last. AND this is a team that at least is TRYING to fix an obvious problem at tackle. A former Pro Bowler who may have something left. That's more than the Cowboys can say about their problem at the same position.
...............Some of you who are avidly defending Jerry & Bill need to wake up. It's time to spend! The worse thing that could happen is have a team that once again misses the Playoffs in the last week, and think of the over $10 million left in cap space that could have been spent on that missing component. To think of that rookie kicker who blew the 30 yard FG in week 15 that kept us out of the Playoffs, when instead we could have been spending some of our empty cap space on a damn good kicker.
I don't know what it is with Jerry & Bill. Stubborness? Maybe Bill is too old school to spend big on a kicker and free agency. Maybe they think the scouting department is so improved that we can repeat a draft like last year's success. (doubt it!) Maybe they think they can land some great players by waiting. Well, we saw what happenened in 2004 with that strategy. Granted, there are better players in this year's free agency crop, but I hope they know what they're doing.
Bill has no one to blame but himself if he fails this year. I thought this was supposed to be the year Parcells went for it all. I guess not.
