If Marion Barber rushes for 1200 yards this season and is allowed to leave as a free agent at the end of this season, what level of compensation would we receive as a compensatory pick?

He is a Pro Bowl player, therefore, it will be high.....however, I would rather keep MBIII

Its not based on this years production, it would be next years, when he is on a new team.

I thought at least 3 teams received 3rd round comp picks this year.

I depend on the Cowboys to keep my friends who are Giants fans humble so I have some intrest in this thread....Dont even THINK about letting Barber go!!!...

A third is the highest and it would be 2010 before we'd receive anything.

You are correct, the highest round a team can get as compensation is the 3rd round.

There is no compensation the NFL could give us taht would be equal. Only another could could give us fair value for MBIII.

If Barber rushes for 1200 yards in share mode.............he ain't going anywhere.

I think resigning barber's gonna be a problem. look who he has as his agent.

Actually, if he has 1200 hundred yards and leave we wouldn't get any thing in return because next year he will be a unrestricted free agent. If a team would have signed him this year they would have to give up a first pick if we didnt match the offer. I could be wrong, but im pretty sure we wouldnt get any compensatory picks.

When a team gives up a pick for signing a restricted FA, that's not a compensatory league pick...the team gives up their own draft pick.

A compensatory pick for Barber would depend not only on what he did for his new team, but also any free agents we signed the same year.

For example, if MBIII signed with another team and had a huge year as their starter, but we signed Roy Williams and he started for us at WR, it's likely we wouldn't get anything for MBIII.

I think his contract demands will eventually slide down to the value he shows this season...it wouldn't surprise me if he ends up signing a 35 million dollar contract before the season concludes.

Yup, pretty much already covered here, but the compensatory picks you guys would get are a function of two things...

1) His salary with the new team (the higher the salary, the higher the pick)
2) Games played / started

If you sign somebody for more than Barber got and played as much or more, than you lose the pick. However, if you sign somebody else for one cent less or the same and played one game less, than you get Barber's compensatory pick.

I hope JJ puts up 1500+ for the Seahawks this year.

I hope the guy leads the league in rushing. Seriously.

Not exactly.

There are three factors -- his contract with his new team, his playing time with his new team (not games played/started) and any "postseason honors" he gets with his new team. Those determine his compensatory value. If we lose more qualifying free agents than we sign, and if we don't sign a player whose compensatory value is in the same round as Barber's or higher, then we would get a comp pick for him.
