Compensatory pick question

Reading the debate in another thread about who(m) to trade if the "Boys draft McFadden next year, I was wondering whether there would be a compensatory pick given the Cowboys if they let Jones go to FA when his contract expires.

Would the pick be based on where he was drafted, or would performance come into the picture? Say he rushed for 1500 yards this year and the "Boys made the NFC championship game. What would be the outcome, if any?

Just wondering.

It would depend on who we got to replace him. If it's McFadden and he rushes for 2000 yds we get nada.

I did not think that mattered at all. I did not think draft picks came into play. Just free agents lost and free agents signed. It would be based on Julius' draft position. Lose an undrafted free agent and you get nothing in return because they were undrafted.

So we could get a second for JJ if we let him walk and don't sign any free agents? If that is the case, the Jerruh was thinking ahead and is a genius for trading with the Browns.

That's not true.

Otherwise teams would let their bust 1st rounders go all the time to recoup a 1st rounder...

Or a 2nd, etc....

I found this:

COMPENSATORY DRAFT PICKS: Compensation awarded by the league to teams who lost more UFAs than they signed. Compensation is in the form of extra draft picks added to the end of rounds three through seven. The quantity of picks is equivalent to the difference of UFAs signed to UFAs lost. For example, if a team loses 4 UFAs and signs 1 UFA, they will receive three Compensatory Selections. The value of the picks is determined by the difference of the contracts signed by the players lost and those acquired. The highest possible compensatory pick is the 31st of the third round (91st overall). If a team has signed an equal number or more UFAs than it lost, no "Compensatory Picks" are awarded.

So the Cardinals should be in good shape with a high comp. pick next year?

So, a late thrid rounder for JJ? If he has an average year, then it would be okay, but if he has a break out year, then it would not. He had better put up some numbers this year or else we go get a franchise back in the draft.

I don't believe you get a comp pick if you upgraded the position.

It's irrelevant what happens to the position after the player leaves, who his replacement is or what his replacement does. Comp picks are based entirely on free agents lost and signed. Nobody else has anything to do with it.

In short --

Compensatory picks are awarded to teams that lose more or better qualifying free agents than they acquire. The number of picks a team can receive equals the net loss of compensatory free agents, up to a maximum of four. Compensatory free agents are determined by a secret formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. Not every free agent lost or signed is covered by the formula.
