any idea when adam is coming out with his annual list of compensatory picks? his info is always amazing. i'm particularly interested in what we might get for al johnson. he didn't make the pro bowl or anything but he started for the cards all season.

I doubt we get any. The players we signed made the pro bowl.

Good point, I had forgotten all about Johnson. We should receive something for losing him unless they consider Leonard Davis as a replacement.

Doesn't really matter if he's a "replacement" or not. Additions and subtractions via free agency are all factored in regardless of what positions they play, and the addition of Hamlin and Davis far outweighs the loss of Al Johnson. We won't get any compensatory picks.

I would like to piggy back this thread with a relevant question...

What is the track record with compensatory picks?

Who was chosen with a comp pick and how did they fare in the NFL... past and present?

Thanks

I don't put a whole lot of stock into those picks cause I don't recall, during my lifetime, there being any really huge additions/splashes made by those picks. Even as far as them being a heavy contributor as a backup I dont recall a whole lot of great successes with that.

Well, a 3rd or 4th round pick is a 3rd or 4th round pick, regardless of whether it's designated as compensatory or not. You probably don't remember many great players being drafted with compensatory picks because most of them are late 3rd round and later, where great players are the rare exception rather than the rule.

Wasn't he taken by Denver in the 3rd round with their normal draft pick?

He was the last player taken on day one. So it had to be a comp pick.

I'm glad Den took him because the rumor was Parcells wanted him. :(

Very true and I thought about that before I posted the question...:) was just curious because.... they are obviously not picks that were in the teams normal draft pick list... they are essentially add-ons.

So to rephrase my question - how many teams have benefited from those add-on/extra draft picks?

True, true. I was thinking of something totally different, for some reason, and thinking that these comp picks had something to do with that old system (That I dont think they've used in years) the Supplimental draft?

I wasn't thinking about the fact that comp picks now are just extra picks.

Not sure why you would think they might pan out more or less often than other end-of-3rd, end-of-4th type draft picks. They're as valuable as the picks they displace.

Actually, they're a bit less valuable, since they can't be traded (IIRC).

And you know who we got instead?

The BARBERIAN!!! :)

I think I remember reading that the Cowboys were targeting Ryan Moats too. But Philly took him. Thanks Eagles. :D

The most recent comp pick that I remember playing well is Marques Colston.

Edits: Omar Gaither was a comp pick too.
Antoine Bethea
Derek Anderson
Brandon Jones
Derrick Ward
Tony Pashos
David Tyree
Scott Shanle
Chester Taylor
Kyle Kosier
Marlon McCree
Tom Brady
That's just name recognition, no looking up solid role players or linemen.
