I have Vista 64 bit...

I cannot play a DVD, it just sits there and spins in the drive.

I try a CD and I have to go to the Control Panel and click on "open" to see the songs on the CD, then they will play.

I have looked all over the web, but cannot seem to find anything that I can do.

Any advice?

I thought it came with Vista Home Premium?

I unstalled that awhile ago because I still could not play a DVD when it was there.

It depends on what software the computer came with. Usually its a separate program.

Did you install Vista yourself, or did it come pre-installed when you bought the computer? If it came pre-installed, you are more likely to have the necessary software. Most PCs will ship with some DVD playback software already installed. you may need to go to Start->Programs and look and see if there is a program that plays DVDs. If not, try it with Windows Media Center.

Unfortunately most DVDs won't play on Windows straight out of the box without some kind of third party software. This is because of the content restrictions to keep you from using the movie in ways the studio doesn't approve of.

If you can't get the DVD to playback, you may have to purchase DVD playback software.

Are you sure you have a DVD drive and not just a CD drive?

If you are sure, then as someone posted above, go download VLC and use it to play the DVD. VLC is free by the way ..

A drive continuing to spin and not do anything sounds to me like a disc it cannot read. Are you absolutely certain it can read DVDs? How old is the drive or computer it came in?

Try this: Click the Start Orb.

From there, go to: Control Panel

From there: Look for "Device Manager" If you can't find it, look in the search bar in the control panel and type in "Device Manager" Click the Device Manager link that pops up.

Look for a DVD/CD-Rom drives entry.

If you find one, double click it.

In my case, the following appears:

HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH22NS50 ATA DEVICE

Write down what device appears and we can figure out whether or not your drive supports DVDs.

Because that would seem to indicate CD and DVD Writable drive.

I just tried to play the Sleepless in Seattle DVD - same thing, just spins.

Tried a music CD - same thing.
