Firefox and yes, the PC locks up and you have to reboot it.
Hostile can you tell me what version of Firefox it is?

If you have access to it now go to menu Help > About Mozilla Firefox

If you can't do that now, do you remember if it's version 3 or version 4?

EDIT: Also try going to Tools > Addons and if there is a list that pops up (For extensions) click each and click "Disable" to disable each Addon then try restarting Firefox and viewing a video.

Ok, good. And you already did the Adobe flash player update too. Hmmmm, do you happen to have the google or yahoo toolbar installed on that cpu?

I would delete all toobars. Toolbars are evil. Also, try a different browser. If you are using IE or FF, try the other or even Chrome. You might also login as a different person. Sometimes corruption in the users Windows profile can wreak havoc.

If it works in a different browser then uninstall the other browser and specifically go in and delete the profile for that user before reinstalling it.

Does the same thing happen in other browsers (IE, Safari, Chrome)?

IE played a video but wanted a flash upgrade. In the middle of that Blue screen.

Can you download a video from somewhere off the internet and try opening it up on your computer for playback?

http://www.mediacollege.com/downloads/video/hd/

Download some of those directly to your desktop and launch them from the desktop (Not within the browser)

Report back what happens.

Test the hard drive. Weird symptoms like that usually indicate a hardware failure (unless you've got some nasty malware). If it's a Dell, you can tap F12 when you turn the computer on (immediately) and run diagnostics.
