Ryan McBean

Oklahoma State defensive tackle Ryan McBean told me today during a phone interview that he completed his first pre-draft visit this week. The 6-foot-4, 286-pound lineman was in the Steel City on Monday and met with head coach Mike Tomlin and many of the players. You can learn more about the visit in the interview feature that will be published this week at Scout.com.

While at the Combine, McBean had formal interviews with the Jets, Bengals, Broncos, Colts and Jaguars. Jacksonville's interest is strong, as they've also invited him for a pre-draft visit on April 16th. McBean said he's also supposed to stop by at the nearby Dallas Cowboys facility to do a workout for them prior to the draft.

He seems a bit disproportionate for a defensive tackle. I mean, if you can play you can play, but that seems a bit tall and lean.

sounds more like a Defensive end... hes actually smaller than spears,canty,hatcher.. unless he has the frame to gaine 40 lbs

I was looking at those numbers and thought it was odd myself.

Weight seems to light for the D-Line but too have for LB duties.

Don't know anything about this guy or if he has the frame to add weight, or the quickness to lose weight and play a LB spot.

But like you said...if he can play he can play.

Its called leaving no stone unturned. There are a lot of players the boys will be looking at, just in case one of them really impresses them big time.

With this guy's size, he's got versatile written all over him. I'm not sure of his numbers but with a build like that, he could end up being a guy who you groom into an Adalius Thomas type. Someone who can play tackle, end, and at his size, even LB in certain packages.

3-4 defensive end.

Yep... I've been thinking of him as a DE for a little while now. I think undersized 4-3 DT's who have a really good first step fit really well in Wade Phillips 3-4 scheme as DE's.

Phillips DE's shoot the gap and go upfield on every play and first step quickness is a big, big help in making plays. A DE with an explosive first step in Wade's scheme can be an OL's worst nightmare.

I talked about him as a DE for us here in this thread.

http://cowboyszone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=84778

I really like the guy in the mid rounds. He has talent.

I really like Turk McBride for DE too. In the link I provided above, there is another link for a write-up on McBride. In that write up there are several things I like about him, but notice they say:
Best fit at the next level could come as a defensive end in a 3-4 scheme...

They also talk about his motor and have this to say:

Is very quick off the snap...Has an excellent motor...Mobile with good range...Gets good penetration...Strong and powerful...A very good athlete...Does a tremendous job in pursuit...Superb initial punch...Versatile and can play many roles in a number of schemes....A big upside.

I think he'd be a great DE in Wade's defense.

6-5 286 is not far off Ellis. He'll have to bulk up to play DE in the 3-4. He'll have to get leaner to play OLB/DE IMO. His supposed lack of speed and quickness seem far off a guy like Moss and Spencer.

Allen Barbre is a gem of an OT. We could get him in the 3rd or possibly 4th, but he has 1st/2nd round potential. A few of those guys are small school players that I don't know much about, and for the last one, McBean, there's a thread on him somewhere...

Regarding McBean's 3-4 position, the Steelers and 49ers both brought him to look at him as a 3-4 Defensive End. He could add 10+ lbs. no problem.

He'll probably go in rounds 4-5. I'm not sure I'd use a pick in that area on DE. There are a ton of great prospects in those rounds.

Sounds like Barbre's future might be at guard though.

Probably true. He is a little short and light, but man is he athletic. He also doesn't fit the mold of what we apparently are doing with the O-line. He's a perfect fit in Denver.

He fit the mold of what Dallas was doing last year and the year before. Not what they did in Parcells first year or what they are doing now.

Of course, Dallas claims Davis is more athletic than people give him credit for (but is a poor fit for OT.....doesn't really add up....whatever)

The last couple of years they targeted/showed interest in guys like Colledge, Tony Moll, Procter, Berger, etc. Athletic linemen who could move and get to the next level.

Now Davis seems to be a move back to the mauler types. I don't care what they run, but you'll never have a good line if you can't decide on what you want to run.

I believe he'd be a conversion project to 3-4 DE...
