Confusion on the Oline

We've got 4 young guys Costa, Killer, Nagy, and Arkin. We signed a JAG and are looking at another JAG. I'm a little confused by this. I could see one of the JAGS, but why Livingston?

I mean we all hope to get at least one rookie in the top three rounds. We have Kosier who will either move to center or be cut.

Does this mean Arkin is a bust? Are the two Jags better than what we have?

Someone give me some clarity on this?

Dockery and Holland are probably not coming back so you got those two guys to replace off the bat. Don't know if they will keep costa and kosier.

Why do you call them JAGs? You actually know this? I suppose you are an expert on whether these guys are any good, so you've already determined that they bring nothing to the table.

Maybe there is a concept such as bringing a bunch of people in and letting them compete to see who wins the job? And we definitely need to decide on a label for Arkin after his rookie year. We wouldn't want to give the guy time to develop. He needs to be either definitively an elite starter or he is a bust of a 4th round pick.

Assume you meant Livings?

Nothing wrong with competition I think we keep nagy, killa, arkin, and holland with the guy we recently signed and fill the rest out with the draft.

Could be that the term JAG is just a word thrown around by silly fans who really don't have a clue what they're talking about compared to actual NFL coaches.. but who knows?

:D

clarity = depth.

i'm not sure i'd call the carolina OG a JAG at this point. from what i've read he started late in football itself and if we signed him on day 1, they must have done their homework on him.

I'm still holding out hope for Grubbs in FA and/or DeCastro in the draft. We will eventually need two Guards anyway. I still believe though Killer can carry the load at center with Free moving to RT.

My ideal OL this year would be Smith, Grubbs, Killer, DeCastro and Free. (Well as ideal as I think we can get.)

If you notice I'm asking for clarity, show me anything that sigifies these guys aren't JAGS? I'd love to see it, maybe I'm missing something which is why I asked for help in seeing what the plan is.... I think we saw enough from Nagy and Killer to think they could be depth if nothing else.... So if we feel that Arkin is at least in that mix then I'm not sure why you bring in soooo many guys.

I guess my fear is that we are stocking the roster with guys before the draft and I am really hoping we add some young talented beef aong the line. Maybe these guys are young and talented. I just don't know.

I'm not doing a chicken little, I'm asking for peoples thoughts. I don't appreciate the condescending additude of your post.

grubbs is in NO now you can take him off the dream list. damn it.

Turning over stones, trying to find a diamond in the rough, and building competition for the spot. If you were Nagy and Arkin and saw this happening, would you be a bit nervous?

Gives us options if we fail to land a strong candidate for starting interior Oline position in the draft - takes away being forced to draft for need.

Garrett said they wanted to accomplish this in FA all along - didn't want to be forced to draft for need.

hey - i am wondering about our OL moves also, but since we took the young guard from carolina on day 1, i'd have to think they did their homework on him and they don't consider him a JAG. just because i've not heard of a guy doesn't JAG them out, does it?

he's young, he started late, he's got 20 starts under his belt and he looks to be a solid pick if you do some research on the kid.

i'm after more info also but i'm not gonna start off calling people i've not heard of a JAG until i do some of my own homework and doing that shows me he's got some potential. i can see why they signed him now.

When asking for clarity.. don't use the word/phrase/whatever it is "JAG". There's no such thing.

..as for the players, obviously these guys must have a talent that Callahan thinks he can work with. Livings has been a starter for Cincy for the past two years at least.

True. We totally have seen enough to make a permanent judgment on rookie O-linemen. Progress is a myth.

Competition is a myth too.

The team should either pay out the nose of the best guard available or do nothing.

Seems like depth and competition moves to me. Likely Holland and Dockery won't be back so the two new guys are simply guys to come in and compete for playing time or provide quality depth.

It is clear you are freaking out because we aren't drafting DeCastro. You are right in that we aren't.

So, carry on.
