The team is in a position to know a lot more about the day to day situation of Cowboys players than we do. When Connor McGovern was drafted, I think most of us assumed that he was just too highly rated for the team to pass up on, and it was an embarrassment of riches for the offensive line. I think some of us anticipated us potentially letting Collins walk and Williams kicking out to OT.
Now that we have 4 games in the rear view mirror and Collins has been resigned the facts seem to be a lot different than perception. We first made sure McGovern was on the 53 before going to season ending IR, which leaves open the option of his return.
Collins has been resigned and arguably has been our BEST OL. That surely wasn’t anticipated by many.
Now Fred isn’t fully back to his all pro level, Martin is battling back issues and of course Tyron has been beat up for years. Maybe the Cowboys wanted some insurance and if so, good for them. On the other hand maybe the Cowboys were more concerned about the collective health of the OL than we knew.
Connor Williams has been the weak link and will probably continue to be other than due to health issues of the other OL mates. We haven’t seemed to be willing to flip Looney for a pick even though it’s clear he is a starter quality player and it is highly unlikely we will be able to keep him next year due to the cap.
Maybe the Cowboys were not buying insurance so much as planning for the inevitable. The Saints game may have indicated that was a possibility.
