Considering Payton's success with qb's...

is it a foregone conclusion that the Saints will select Linehart? Or could Payton see enough in Brooks to resurrect his career. IMO, that would be the quickest route to his success down there. With a healthy running game (assuming Staley returns healthy) and a well coached Brooks with Stallworth and Horne on the outside could be deadly. That number 2 pick could be traded to add more depth to the roster.

Thoughts?

Duce Staley plays for the Steelers.
Deuce McAllister plays for the Saints.

But only one spells his name correctly.

He isn't going to pass on a franchise qb to stick with Brooks. So unless he doesn't think any of them are franchise worthy expect him to go qb.

Payton's best move for the Saints would be to trade down. If Houston takes Bush some team is going to want to get to #2. I'd take a serious look at Chad Pennington's health. Maybe take Pennington and #4 so the Jets could grab Leinart, the Saints could grab Ferguson, give Pennington '06 off to rehab and be set for a serious team in '07.

I would not give a plug nickel for Chad Pennington; he is hurt every year and cannot be relied upon plus with his salary it just makes no sense.

Payton has a pretty good core of players but he needs to fill out the rest of his roster. I don't think Brooks will ever make a top notch QB but if he could be resurrected it would really open up a lot of options for the Saints. They could get a boat load of draft picks for the #2 and might still be able to pick up a quality developmental QB for with a later pick. Or they might also offer one of those extra picks they could get to us for Romo.

I just cant imagine any chance they pass on Leinart. I think he will be a good one. Lots of weapons already in place, and he is a smart kid.

In all honesty it would surprise me if they don't take Leinart but if some team offers them enough picks I could see them taking the deal and trying to go with Brooks. The question is...which team if any has extra picks and is in bad need of a QB?

I keep laughing at all the theories that Payton wants to bring in Tony "hole in one" Romo when NO has a surefire pick at the best college QB going the last two years... Why Payton would want to dump that scenario out the window is funny. Arm strength be dammed... Leinart did have some playmaking WRs and Reggie Bush behind him, and he did happen to win the Heisman last year and was also in the running this year... Leinart was also undefeated for 29 games. Leinart did play for a super offensive system coached by Pete Carroll, an ex pro-football coach with several years invested of pro coaching. Tony Romo was undrafted and went to what... NorthMidEast Central Connecticut Tech College or something like that. I'm not saying Romo could or could not be valuable somewhere down the line, but pleeease, I don't think you can compare an up and coming obvious top 3 pick with an undrafted guy.

My thinking is that Payton will want Romo as a relatively cheap insurance policy in case Leinart (or whoever) turns out to be a bust or has a longer learning curve than our resident experts predict. It would give Payton a comfort level to have a #2 QB that he trusts in case something goes wrong. Injuries happen to young players; you just never know. So go ahead and laugh but I'll be very surprised if Payton doesn't make some kind of run at Romo regardless of what else he does about the QB position.

If he does make a run at Romo, that's cool, he would have some experience working with him... I've heard that Dallas has turned down draft picks for him before, but I never actually read any story about that. I'd like to see one if someone knew where to dig that up. But, if he was wanted by Payton and NO brass by way of a draft pick swap I'd do that deal in a New York minute. Bill Parcells might not want to however. The old fartknocker.

Todd Bouman and Adrian McPherson are both there also for what that is worth. Really, the chance to take a potential franchise QB in Leinart would be to much for me to pass on. We have probably seen the best Brooks can give and that probably doesn't impress Payton enough not to take Leinart.

consider Brooks gone and I feel Linehart will be the better choice for the Saints then Vince Young. However both QB's are going to be awesome NFL quarterbacks.

I think Brooks is history in New Orleans and I think Leinhart or Young will end up in NO. more likely Leinhart.

Who is Brook's backup in NO ? I could see Payton taking Romo to play this year while he grooms his 1st round QB pick for the following year. If he is really a BP deciple now whoever he picks will ride the bench for a year.

Currently Todd Bouman is the guy who finished the season for NO, as for Romo I don't know if the saints would be willing to give us a pick or player for him.

Interesting, don't know much about Todd Bouman myself. Think Sean would start him for a year ? Asuming that they do release Brooks ? And is Brooks really gone there ? Payton has a rep for saving QB's. Is Brooks due a big salary or bonus this year ?

Lots of questions...

Here's another one, what if Payton did snag Tony for a draft pick. That would leave us short at QB. Who would we want, a vet or a draft pick to replace Tony ?
