Looks like Cowher is calling it quits in Pittsburgh after 15 years as HC of the Steelers. Talk about staying the path. Even through all the near misses, the Rooney family stuck with him.

I wonder how many other GM's and owners have that kind of faith in a coach.

I look over at Oakland and see the mess they're in. Art Shell resigning (or forced to resign) after just ONE season. What's going on in Raiderland? How many coaches have been through over the past few years? One a year? Something like that?

That brings me to my point about our coaching situation. After 25 years with Landry ... we're on our fourth HC since TL. Jimmy Johnson had the greatest success after a 4 year tenure.

Switzer came aboard and won a Super Bowl with Jimmy's players, but was gone after his fourth season. Gailey had two swings, and Campo had 3.

Now talking about WHAT-IF's ... granted, we could not have retained Jimmy. He didn't want to stay. BUT, what if we had retained Barry Switzer for the past 10 years? Would we have faced a similarly demoralizing decade of losing? Or would the stability of having one HC overcome our adversities?

I think we never gave Switzer enough credit for what he did for this organization. He had a goofy demeanor ... which led to the Bozo the Coach remarks. But his ultimate demise was free agency, lack of leadership from Jerry Jones, horrible GM-ship from up above, and Troy tuning out.

Nevetheless, I look at all the wasted years we went through with Gailey, Campo, and even Parcells. Would Switzer have been more successful than the combined records of these three coaches over the same time period???

I'm just weighing in on the importance of stability.

Huge difference between a young HC growing into a role and a coach who spent his career in college, was out of coaching for some time and was 57 at the time of his hiring.
