Contracts for the "new" O-Line?

It was just last year that Kosier was brought in for a chunk of money. Now, we hand both Gurode and Davis new contracts. Did Flozell get a new deal recently as well?

I'm not saying I'm against it, but if we also get Colombo resigned then there has been a huge chunk of signing bonuses and contracts committed to the o-line.

Anyone have the numbers on Adams, Gurode and Kosier?

Kosier came in for 5 years 15 million. That is nothing for a starter.

Adams has I believe a year left.

Gurode's deal came our realistically to a 4 year 18 mill deal (about 4.5 mill a year).

Flo is in the last year of a 5 year deal he signed back in 2003.

Thanks. It's not as bad as I thought with Flo's expiring this year. You think Colombo wants more than what Gurode got? I know tackles get more, but he's basically only played for one season.

I guess next year we either re-sign Flo or look yet again at the FA O-line market.

Resigning Colombo is critical. McQuistan and Proctor are backups.

If you do NOT have a good OL you will not go anywhere. If we can resign Columbo, we are looking pretty good right now.

Basically we got bargains with TWO. We are now paying big bucks for Davis; and probably for Columbo as well if we get him back. SO I guess it balances out.

I wouldn't be surprised if Flo's contract were extended. For all the gripes by fans as they pertain to Flo, when comparing him to other left tackles, he's still fairly solid. And of course when you add those critical two words next to his name "pro bowl" He's going to get another big contract...by the 'boys or somebody.

And when you consider that you have a young quarterback back there, there is some comfort in having a veteran LT watching his blindside.

What IS the Hotels charge for next year? What seemed huge in 2003 might not be that big now.

That is a very good question. I don't see how but he does play OT and they are generally higher paid.

To me, a solid O-Line is worth its weight in gold. No QB, regardless of how good he is, is going to be very effective without time to throw. Same for the RBs, WRs, & TEs. You can have pro-bowlers at every "skill position" but if the O-Line isn't up to par then it will not work.

I wouldn't mind paying 1/3 of our cap on the O-Line if need be, so long as we get true quality there and not simply average guys that we are paying a ton of money to.

I also have a theory that you ALWAYS draft OL on Day-1 of the draft, every year. You can never have too many quality OLs and depth is absolutely necessary. Lose one starting WR and you can get by with a lesser quality guy as a replacement. But if you lose one OL to injury then the integrity and effectiveness of the entire O-Line are in jeopardy. It is the one unit on the team that MUST play together all the time for the offense to be effective.

Either that or you get a Michael Vick or Vince Young type of QB who can gain yards running the ball but those guys NEVER win championships.

Now we need to lock up Columbo and we will be set!

I can't recall exactly but I think he's got a big base salary this year. And we owe like 2 mill toward the cap for his SB. One report i saw said he's got about a 5 mill base so he's got a 7 mill cap charge.

Extending him would be a good idea but I doubt he'd want it. Flo will hit FA at 32 years old next year with multiple pro bowls under his belt. He may not get the kind of money that the under 30 crowd is getting but he's still got some good years left.

Thump, you and I are old school guys - the game is won in the trenches. Look back in Cowboys history. Everytime we won we had a very good O-line.

You are right about drafting OL every year also. Because we drafted so poorly in the past, we have to hire guys like Kosier and Davis to fill holes.

You are right Big Dog, as usual. :D

Another thing to consider is that Linemen tend to play longer than some other positions because speed isn't a part of their game. They are a good value in the draft because of it.

It kills me that Peterson and Rogers never panned out. Both guys were from big time programs and should have been good players. Obviously OL was not a specialty of Parcells.

BP did fine with the Oline everywhere else he was. Just here he seemed to make mistakes. The only first day draft choices that failed were on the O line.

And Parcells had some bad luck, too.

Flozell's season ending injury a few years ago killed that season.

And Riveria's treadmill malfunction - seemingly moments after being signed, didn't help matters at all.

As far as another actual OL mistake - that might have been Torrin Tucker. Parcells invested too time (and confidence) in Tucker, and it didn't pay off. In retrospect, Parcells should have gotten rid of Tucker.

Al Johnson, missed rookie year with knee surgery

Stephen Peterman, missed rookie year with knee surgery

Jacob Rogers, might as well have missed his rookie year.

Guys who miss their first year end up seriously disadvantaged.

And we've got a squirt to throw the ball over those tall OLs.

...just sayin'...

use those larger linemen to open up throwing lanes....

I have to admit that I have been inclined over the past five years, to draft linemen high up in the draft, also...

I just hope that the opportunity to do some real damage for the future, will be second sorted when injuries start to happen to the wide receiver's group... and there we go again for another decade.

Right now, my quandry is this, does Dallas, with the opportunity to put one or even two top notched players into it's secondary, use this draft in rounds one and two, to do so, possibly with a trade down in one, a move up in two, and an additional third rounder....a couple of defensive backs this year, from a group of:

Daymeon Hughes CB
Eric Wright CB
Chris Houston CB
Marcus McCauley CB
Aaron Ross CB
Tarrell Brown CB

Reggie Nelson S
Michael Griffin S
Aaron Rouse S
Brandon Merriweather S

A pair of them, and the Dallas secondary is coming up much stronger for both physical play and ability in the secondary, and also, as a protection in the projected increased burdens that the cap movements indicate will be a burden on future cap management.

...and following along, with the two third round selections, take a pair from the following:

Josh Beekman OG/C
Tim Duckworth OG
Corey Hilliard OG
Manuel Ramirez OG
T.J. Downing OG

Doug Free OT
Ryan Harris OT
James Marten OT

Follow that up on Day Two with:

Round 4-

Charles Johnson DE/OLB
Dan Bazuin DE/OLB
Brian Robison DE/OLB

Round 5-

Walter Thomas NT
Paul Solial NT

With a draft such as that, then they could really start heading towards the 'far nether regions' and attempt to glean some jewels in the rough....

first Rivera then Kosier why not Davis... this team cannot build an OL through the draft and it never will!!!
