They absolutely do matter, big time. If they didn't, then teams would abolish them.
They call them "voluntary" because it is an attitude test. You decide you don't need to show up and it shows that you have the wrong attitude.
It's a test that has been around a long time.
The NFLPA is trying to abolish OTAs.
Lamar Jackson is missing OTAs
Deandre Hopkins missed OTAs to work on his brand
Laramie Tunsil is missing OTAs, because he never attends OTAs.
Christian McCaffay and Brandon Aiuyk aren’t at OTAs
Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, Devante Adams, Justin Jefferson, Jaylon Johnson
Etc. You could make a heck of a roster with those guys.
Here’s my entire point, and the point to my previous post.
I don’t like Micah missing OTAs. I’d rather him be there. I’d rather him be that firey “team leader”. I’d rather him focus less on the podcast (although quite a few of these guys have podcasts). All the usual complaints with Micah are sentiments I share.
But I think it’s silly to let these things distract from the fact that Micah carving his name in NFL history books for his play on the field. I think it’s silly to let these things distract from the fact that Micah is an impact player, one who NFL head coaches, OCs and QBs have to account for every snap.
And the “trade Micah because he has a podcast and isn’t a leader and this and that” mantra I keep hearing is bizarre to me, because those are not good enough reasons for me to want to trade away an elite pass rusher.
