One of the things always pounded in my head during games(besides booze) is the importance of converting on 3rd down. If you can't convert you cant move the ball. Pretty basic right? In all the ugliness that was the offense last year one of the things that got over looked is the Cowboys ability to convert. It was superb. Ranked 5th in the league by these guys- http://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/third-down-conversion-pct I know why it got overlooked- because no one get's rings for this but no one get's rings without it either.

Another nice article here ranking the NFL's most effective QB's on 3rd down with Romo coming in at a cool 4th.

To me this is huge because without the ability to convert 3rd downs we would have no idea how good the kicker is or how bad these guys are in the red zone. Cowboys are a step ahead on that one.

The radio announcers in Houston did a comparison of the Cowboys vs The Texans yesterday and who would have a better season based on stats alone. It was surprising that the Cowboys offensive production was very very good, except for running (tied for 31st). Our passing stats were GREAT, 3rd down conversion % was near the top, yards you name it. We blew the Texans out of the water.

However, they then went to discuss the defense. Piss poor in every single category - I'm talking ranked 22-32 in EVERY category. Their conclusion was the Texans would have a better season on last seasons objective stats alone. I agree. But it points out to me just how good Romo is! Zero OL and Zero running game and we're still near the top on offense!

Not just him but the the play calling can't have been as bad as made out to be either. Offensively these guys just need someone who is a threat to pop through the hole and get a 10 or 15 yard chunk consistently on the ground then the RZ opens up more too.
