Cook says he is open to returning to Dallas

Mc
I think Jeanty is more of a sure thing and contributes snap 1 of day 1. McMillan is likely good too. But I think a guy like DK or even Kupp would make a better #2 option where they sit in their career archs.

Think what even a Thielen could have done here vs Tolbert or Cooks. This leans my pick toward Jeanty.
McMillan is the better buy.

Who is that player?

Everyone says who's not good, but I rarely
see a solution...respectfully not going at you LACowboy.
I'd look hard at Cooper Kupp if LA is willing to eat some of his salary. I think there are multiple draft options in McMillan and Egbuka, possibly Golden. Two of those guys may be trade down options as well. The ship has sailed, but I think that Christian Kirk had some sneaky value and would have been worth the 7th round pick that Houston gave up.

I have to say it again. All fingers keep coming back pointing to McCarthy. The evidence of his mismanagement of players during his time in Dallas only continues to grow. There are many reasons I keep saying he should have been gone after GB. This is another one. At least he is gone now.
Jerry's fault......even Vince Lombardi can't turn a #3 WR into a #2.

Jerry's cheapness strikes again and any HC that comes here starts at an immediate disadvantage

Certainly possible its just been a case of bad luck for Cooks recently, but his yards per route and YAC per catch have both been declining every year since 2020. Personally I would roll the dice on someone new and preferably more suited for Daks strengths instead of a 32 year old whose best asset is his speed.

I'm also not expecting a huge change in the passing scheme with this team. From what Schottenheimer has said it sounds like a lot more balanced looks/formations, more play action, and tighter splits to work the outside of the field more. To me it sounds like we should expect a lot more of the same....comeback routes and crossers. Plus if the league continues the trend of heavily playing 2 deep looks. All the analytics right now are saying those are best routes to create separation with so I bet teams continue to run them at a fairly high rate.
I'd like the game tape show and decide why Cooks yards after catch, splash plays been on decline, not looking at it online and paper
.but if we also have a recent re-signed highest paid QB in the NFL who is so limited that we cannot maximize speed and vertical ability then that is also deeply concerning
and threatens to limit our attack, imo.

Time will tell if Schott is just ice frosting a stale cake, ..if he is a door salesman that is just talking and upselling a new look offensive attack than McCarthy's stop/comeback pass designs, .one that was hideous in red zone efficiency and never seems to emphasizes the TE ( zero TDs from Fergy ?)

Time will tell how much was MCarthy's preference and insistence in the pass design ..and how much/less influence was Schott in the last 2 years vs McCarthy.

AS far 2 deep look defenses, Detroit Lions would be my auto look example of a scheme that works best at splash plays and separation/run after catch momentum.. of course they have such balance in their run game, which they utterly stay in tune in every game, and then that sets up the play action passes that they feast on,.. but do they scheme their receivers open with their bunch formations- rub routes pass design ? .

He has been on a decline the last 2-3 years however from the get go I was vocal that we never used him correctly. Was exiceted we brought him at first then was like *** what was the point if you just handicap him l.

He put up good/great numbers with jag quarterbacks most of his career si he is more than capable. Never ulitized his strength at all. Was a wasted move

I'm just curious, why you don't think the Rams will release Kupp? His GM says it's highly unlikely he will return and if I'm reading his contract right, only $5M guaranteed money is left on his current deal. I'm guessing they will release him sometime next week.......

His market value....

My bigger point is that a 32 year old WR has typically lost their fastball. Not to say that Cooks is slow, but he is probably far from that 4.33 speed that make him a 1000 yard receiver for so long. I'm not sure he is really that stress on teams vertically that we like to think he is. Honestly I'd just let Turpin take over that role anyways.

I dont disagree with you here, but a guy like Cooks is probably not touching the field for Detroit as anything other than a rotational 3rd/4th guy. We can debate scheme vs talent all day but that would be my whole goal is to create strength at the WR position where we dont have to debate middle of the pack WRs are options to put in the starting lineup.

"not using him to his strengths". Key words there. Cooks is no longer the guy to run stretch routes or flies. His strength, even for his size, if crossing routes and getting the ball on the move. You can't use him for slants, and stuff like that because his size is a disadvantage. But he is a crafty guy as a WR3.

Its very possible they do, but I'm sure they would rather trade him. Kupp is a $17M cap hit if they trade him now. He carries a $21M cap hit as a post june 1 cut. If they were willing to eat just a little bit of his money this year why not do a similar deal like Christian Kirk and Houston? Float them a late pick and you get Kupp at probably a slightly inflated number for this year, but you're really only committed to him for 1 year. Let him hit free agency and you have to come up with signing bonus money, probably float him a multi year commitment, etc. You're absolutely right that they can get him at a cheaper AAV as a free agent, but you have several other teams that will be bidding up how much of guaranteed, number of years etc.

Personally if LA is willing to play ball (and they might not be) I wouldnt hate just flipping him for a late pick and cutting out the free agency BS.

Turpin has to be schemed where he is unscathed and non-jam-pressed at the line whereas Brandin is more physically stronger and experienced at beating press jam at line
than a Turpin. Turpin is not the outside WR that Brandin Cooks is in that role.

As far as Detroit Lions and Brandon Cooks, they already have their 1-2 WRs set in place with long term deal with St. Brown and 1st round draft pick speedy Jamison.

Well said. Getting into his 30s his strengths are not what they were in his prime. I really dont think the Cowboys used him in that bad of a way the last couple of year...not nearly as much as the issue is hes simply probably 80% of what he once was at his best.

Lol. I remember the excitement when cook was signed.
Cowboys management thought of Brandin Cooks one way ( thus the trade for him) ...while HC McCarthy thought of Brandin Cooks a far different way ( i don't think he even wanted Cooks)

Remember how McCarthy was hammered by the local media in how badly he non-involved and ignored Cooks in the passing offense the first half of 23 season ?
McCarthy's emotional response to the criticism ... " I don't play Fantasy Football "

Pass. He was not a difference maker.
We need consistent play makers.
how consistent of a play maker can you be when the only route really called for him was the curl??? The end zone corner route or whatever it was they were nice, he scored on a few of those. We need more of a threat, i'll pass!!!!

Maybe....but I have to believe if a team wanted him bad enough it would have already happened. Notice how quickly the Texans jumped on Kirk trade ( 24-48 hours ) after it was announced. This is just me, Kupp will be 32 in June and has only played 1 full season ( 2021 ) in 8 years. Just don't see a team pulling the trigger for that amount of money knowing the Rams WILL release him. Just a matter of when....even then, I think he's looking at a modest 2-year deal on the open market. I hate to say it but he's old and injury prone.....not a good combination.
