1. The beer was cold. No more complaining about the price.
2. Jason Witten goes full speed, all the time.
3. I don't like the "stars" Romo, Witten, Austin, Felix, coming out of the tunnel 15 minutes after the rest of the team has had warm ups. Maybe the team tells them to do it so the fans can get a good look at them, but it sure looks like they're too good to bother with the stuff the other players are doing. "Prima Donnas" is the phrase that comes to mind. I have no idea why they do it, but I think it looks bad. Wish our "media guys" would ask that question.
4. I've been to two practices now, and both times, Dez was one of the first guys on the field.
5. Maybe it's just to perfect the timing, but it looks like Tony Romo has a new favorite target in Dez. He seems to look for him first, on almost every drill.
6. Dez Bryant, and Demarcus Ware are far and away the best players on the field. Demarcus Ware is making our OL look like high-schoolers.
7. Montrae Holland and Tyron Smith together on the right side looks like disaster waiting to happen. Two on two drills, Demarcus Ware went through them like they were standing still. Not around; through.
8. The long broken-tackle TD Ogletree scored today was an interesting thing to me. Not the TD, not the broken-tackle (Josh Thomas, Rookie CB), but the after the play stuff. Ogletree was clearly heading towards the endzone without any chance of anybody catching him, but Terrance Newman, from the other side of the field was running towards him. Ogletree who had initially slowed down after breaking the tackle, saw him coming and ran towards the end zone. Newman continued to chase. They ran all the way to the corner of the goal line. Ogletree made it with a yard to spare. Now the interesting thing to me was this: Newman didn't want him to reach the endzone. Ogletree wanted to. I saw pride on the practice field today that I havent' seen in years. The fans cheered. The coaches let them run and then went on to the next play.
9. Orlando Scandrick may set a record for most sacks by a corner-back this year. His slot blitzes got there three times in fifteen minutes.
10. This defense was disruptive when they were using their multiple front movement stuff. At one time, it looked like Ratliff was in a ILB spot before walking to a DE position and then settled at NT. On one play, Spencer had his hand on the ground almost shoulder to shoulder with Ratliff on the nose. This is labeled as a 3-4 defense, but damned if I know why. They are all over the place.
11. Ogletree, during a passing drill, made a lot of friends in the end zone by tossing a ball into the stands.
12. There is no way that Holland and Smith, right now, are better than Davis and Colombo. I keep saying, "it's early, they'll be alright." But I am concerned. On one toss to the right, they apparently did okay, because the RB, I think it was Tanner, hit a seam for a 15-20 yard gain. But for the most part, Oline is getting beat up, abused, schooled, tossed, and embarassed. I know they are up against a pretty good front seven, but still, they looked bad today.
13. Tysson Poots has no chance of sniffing the practice squad. He listened closely to the coaching and seemed eager to learn, but he needs to go to the arena league and refine his game. Not smooth on routes, and dropped several passes.
14. As always, the extra WR spots will probably come down to special teams skills. They ran through some drills today where they ran ten yards, hit one guy with a blocking pad and bounced off him to "tackle" another guy 10 yards further down field. The DBs and Safeties looked good. Most of the WRs looked tentative. Especially the rookies.
15. Didn't see Holley on the practice field today. Not saying he wasn't there, I just mean if he was, I didn't see him.
16. Nagy looked pretty solid. He played some of guard and some center. I see him as Travis Bright's replacement. Arkin also looked like a keeper. Young and Parnell seemed about even during the postional drills, but Young was much better during 11-11.
17. Okay. I now have two pet cats: Leong and Radway. They don't run routes or catch the ball like rookies. I've been to two practices and haven't seen Leong drop anything. At the end of one passing drill, Kitna made a point of walking up to Leong, gave him a hand slap and smiled, and then talked closely to him all the way back to the 50 yard line for the next drill. Romo talked to him last practice I was at. I think they see his potential. Of course, because he is my pet cat, I may be reading it all wrong.
18. Manny Johnson doesn't look like a stringbean anymore. He looks bigger and stronger.
19. The Martellus Bennett frustration continues. He can look like a future star, and then drop a easy tight end screen pass. After one drop, John Garrett walked with him all the way back to the huddle. Looked like a replay of "hard-knocks".
20. Given time, because there is no pass rush, the QBs and WRs seem to play against air when going seven on seven.
21. Jason Garrett spent a lot of time with the WRs today.
22. Kitna is the weakest armed QB on the roster. Eskridge looked like he has some keeper potential.
23. Very few guys stand around during these practices. Everything moves at a quick pace. The players jog from one drill to another, and on and off the field during team drills. The offense, and the defense both jog back to their positions and huddles after each play. While the drills were going on, all the kicking specialists were running sprints from one side of the field to the other.
24. Tony Romo continues to be involved in drills even when it isn't his turn. Playing pass rusher during passing drills so the other QBs have to side step before throwing, and other things like that. He is involved all the time. Wish he were more of a leader. (that last is sarcasm).
25. Demarcus Ware plays like a man against boys out there.
26. Looks like they have decided the FS position is AOA's to lose.
27. Josh Brent and Sean Lissamore stood out to me a bit today, but that may be because the OL was so bad. Looked like Brent was the only defensive player on the fg/extra point kicking team. (blue jersey instead of white).
28. Thursday's practice should be interesting. I think all the FAs will be out there in pads with the team. I hope Free and Kosier make the OL better.
29. Maybe I'm wrong, but it doesn't look like Alan Ball's heart is into the move back to CB.
30. Overall, after two practices, I see a couple areas of major concern. Oline, and safety. Oh, wait, I guess everybody else has seen the same thing. The oline will get better when three starters return, but without another vet, safety is a position that I don't think is ready for prime time.
31. The popcorn was extra salty, but the beer was extra cold.

Good job Cooter. Donlt like number 26.

Thanks for the update. We need our OL starters to get in. Going vs. Ware will make the rookie better. I have also read that Ware is working with him.

Holley was tecnically a free agent, so he's not able to practice until Thursday. That's why McCann isn't out there either.

OL and Safety has been an issue...and seems to still be an issue. I don't want to be negative but I'm worried.

Stephen said today that they still expect to sign two safeties soon, so I'm not worried.

Great write up Cooter, much appreciated.

Alan Ball shouldn't be practicing yet. He just signed a contract and has to wait for the cba to kick in aug 4.

Not to disregard Cooter--who's OP was great--but this is the first I've read of any significant problems with the replacement players on the OL. Other than the Tyson-having-problems-blocking-Ware stuff, of course, most of the OL coverage has been pretty positive. This with our starting LOT and LOG out of the lineup.

I'm only worried about the safeties, and even that I'm waiting before jumping to a conclusion.

Awesome, thanks!

In defense of the vets coming out late, most of the practices thus far have kicked off with special teams.

Great report! Thank you!

The O-Line will be vastly improved once the vets join the fold. I'm very excited about the long term prospects of the line. I would like to see a power running back in the mix.

Offense- OL in particular take a little longer due to timing- Defense- DL are attacking from day one. Give the OL a little time.

Not at all worried about Holland's capability as he's a proven vet. I wonder if it's not coordination between he and Smith that is making both look bad.

I'm still concerned about Holland's conditioning & durability though.

Fantastic write-up Cooter! Much appreciated. And I'm growing enamored with those rookie WR's from your reports.

I hope things start to jell soon for the OL. Sounds to me like Cooter is seeing some potential trouble out there.

I guess you were impressed. How good was Ware again? ;)

Thanks for the in depth updates. It's great for us that are not there.

Thanks for the write-up but might I throw out a request.....

Spacing.
