Dallas is practicing a lot more press coverage. On one play the offense lined up in a slot formation and Anthony Henry and Terence Newman both took a man, lining up just two to three yards off the ball. Newman told me he has asked DC Brian Stewart to let the defense play more press. “I know they want to zone blitz, that’s what [Stuart and Phillips] did in San Diego, but with the players we have here, I think you have to let them play to their abilities.” Based on this morning’s work, the defensive coaches may have paid attention.

That's what happens when you replace Jacques Reeves with A Jones or Jenkins.

Also don't forget Nate Jones.

Press coverage, finally, this is music to my ears.

True, I forgot about Nate Jones.

We did play press until Reeves or Jones had to come in the game.

Nate was our corner blitzer, hope with the speed of Newman, Jenkins, Jones (pac) and even Scandrick (sp), filling that void won't be an issue.

I like that Stewart is willing to listen to player input and give their suggestions a chance. No ego problem there. :D

You got to love Newman's attitude! Mike Jenkins should feel pretty comfortable with press coverage because that is what he played in college and excelled in.

Why is that, Roy won't be on the field.

It'll be your midgets against our midgets while your other midget watches from his skysuite.

Playing man or zone

Most cornerbacks love to play man-to-man, well at least the good ones. The Cowboys might play a little more zone this year, especially when the team sends five defenders at the quarterback.

But corner Terence Newman believes you can play man-to-man and still blitz with effectiveness.

"They zone blitz in San Diego," Newman said alluding to the fact that Wade Phillips, used to be the defensive coordinator with the Chargers. "With the players we have here, you have to let them play to their abilities and go out and press and try to utilize it and think of other ways to get guys to rush."

The speed and power of outside linebackers Greg Ellis, DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer should allow that.

This is wonderful news.

I've been waiting for that for years.

You ain't kidding. I remember yelling out at least 50 times last season...

"Why the hell is Reeves playing 34 yards off the WR?!!???!!!!???"

Thank God we now have more quality players and they get to play to their strengths. I hope they play Jenkins a lot especially when up by 14 points, maybe full time most second halfs. I will sure miss yelling at the tv about zone coverage.

Haha I too remember these "cushions" Reeves would give. Pretty pathetic.

Wade has the D he needs to really show why we brought him and his defensive philosophy here so he better make the most of it. We're just as or even more talented than his San Diego unit now.
