Cory Trice - CB - Purdue

He certainly has the size Quinn likes at 6'3.

Looks like a 3rd rounder to me.

He is a riser, for sure. He tested better than people expected with that big frame of his.

Trice’s time in the 3-cone was 6.70 and his short shuttle time was 4.06, both are high-end times for a CB. They’re really good times for a guy who is 5-10, 180 lbs… much less for a guy who is 6-3, 205 lbs. like Trice.

I’ll put it like this: 5-11, 175 WR Charlie Jones’ 3-cone at Purdue’s pro day was 6.84 to Trice’s 6.70. Pretty incredible.

At the combine Trice ran a 4.47 40 with a 35.5 vertical and an 11.0’ broad. Very nice numbers for a corner his size. He also put up 17 reps on the bench, which is also good for his 32.4 inch arms.

His 2022 tape didn’t really look like he had quite that elite change of direction, but this past season he was coming off of an ACL tear from the 2021season. There are some scouts that believe he wasn’t quite back to normal in the 2022 season and that the extra 4 months of recovery time between the end of the season and his pro day actually let him get all the way back to normal, including back to that crazy change of direction.

Mike Renner from PFF said that if that is the case, there are a ton of people underestimating how good Trice is, because having that kind of size with that kind of change of direction is a combination that is pretty damn rare.

Speaking for myself, one of my biggest issues with real tall corners is that their change of direction is poor in comparison to a WR that is 2 or 3 inches shorter. It is difficult for those guys to be sticky in coverage, despite the obvious advantages they have from being big, long and strong.

However, a corner who is 6-3, 205 who has the movement skills of a 5-10, 185 guy? I’d take a flyer on a guy like that any day of the week. That get’s my interest big-time. Throw in his speed and strength and I think you have a guy that could be drafted later and end up having a really good career.

Trice is, IMO a really nice prospect for any team that wants to play press-man in their secondary. I’m not sure how early he’ll go now but it would be really fun to see what Quinn could do with him, because Quinn specializes in making great use of those long corners.

Exactly, Qs scheme is all about being bigger, faster and more athletic and he is just initially getting there with players like Kearse, hitting on picks/players like Bland, Muk, hopefully Bell are bonus points.

The back seven has been his immediate focal point, and this is a strong back 7, deeper now than it has been in years at this point, pre draft.

If we come away with another steal in the mid rounds I will not be upset, even players with KJ draft stock start growing up quick when they feel a little pressure sometimes.

This defense is moving forward and that is a great thing, maybe Q gets his DT in this draft, we shall see, but MM has control of the offense, so I believe the HC gets his preference first, early.

This upcoming draft will speak volumes.

Scouting report reads hes best suited for press / zone which and we’re a zone heavy team so it’d be a good fit.
