Could a late-round pick help keep Marion Barber in Dallas?

I was checking out cnnsi.com's draft video page, and I noticed a safety named Dominique Barber from Minnesota. I clicked on it, and sure enough, he is Marion Barber's brother. Now, let's say we draft a RB in the 2nd round, that would seem to indicate that we want to keep Barber as a primary back. But drafting his brother may help bring down the cost a little. Dominique Barber could be an option for us since we lost Davis, our special teams captain. I'm just throwing that out there, as a change of pace from all the DMac, Chris Johnson, and Pacman threads we have going on.

We need safeties here too badly to be playing this kind of game.

Keeping it in the family can sometimes lead to more problems than if they simply were never on the same team. While I doubt getting rid of one Ayodele will suddenly make the other demand a trade, I'd simply take the BPA over something like this.

I thought of them too, but I'm sure that Dominique Barber has more talent that Troy Hambrick. And we definitely know that Marion Barber has more talent than Darren Hambrick.

But all I'm saying is if we are looking at a safety towards the end of the draft, and Barber is up on our list, than why not take him. I'm not thinking that Dallas is PLANNING on taking Dominique Barber, just suggesting that they might take him. I'm saying this could be an interesting scenario, and quite frankly, more likely to happen than Jerry trading into the top 6 for McFadden.

Don't get me wrong, I'm on the Barber bandwagon and not because he's Marion's brother. I think the kid is going to be a player and would be a great late round pick.

If that's the case and he's anything like his brother then go for it. We should draft a safety in this draft.

He kind of sounds like Kieth Davis, good specials teams player, not someone you want in coverage.

Dallas had Emmitt Smith's brother on the practice squad for a little while...

I actually can picture a MB3 clone tearing down field on kickoff coverage, beating the be-jezus out of many an unwary player. Taz 2.0

I'll take a Keith Davis replacement in the 6th or 7th round any day. We're going to have a hole in special teams coverage. I'm not sure Carp can do it all by himself.

See Sig.

This reminded me of the Palmer brothers in Cincinnati.

Carson's little brother Jordan is riding third string up there this year...

When this topic was discussed last time I was in favor of getting Dominique Barber with a late and still feel that way.

Barber has mix to make it in NFL

Dave Campbell, The Associated Press
Published Monday, April 14, 2008

For all those stopwatch-obsessed scouts who helped shape the order of selections that will unfold in two weeks at the NFL draft, we offer this Troy Williamson reminder.

There are countless examples, across the league and over the years, of players whose value to a professional football team was overinflated by a high-percentile workout at the Indianapolis meat market otherwise called the combine.

Sweet vertical jump? Sign him up.

Bone-crushing bench press? He’s a blue chipper.

Fast 40 time? First round it is.

This is a total-body, extreme-explosion sport where a split second of closing speed can mean the difference between a game-ending tackle to win the Super Bowl and a goat-style whiff at the goal line to give up the game-clinching touchdown. So sure, stats like that matter.

Far too often, however, they cloud the judgment of the teams making these picks and send a guy like Williamson who never stood out on a run-first offense at South Carolina and left college a year early surging up the draft board.

When he joined the Vikings, he was just as fast at sprinting down the field on a go route as all the analysts touted. If only that tiny flaw, not being able to catch the ball, hadn’t been in the way. Then he might still be in Minnesota, entering his fourth season with a handful of touchdown catches and 100-yard games to his credit.

Good players are good players, though, and those without the proper instinct, tenacity and composure almost always fade away once their raw physical skills are exposed as only that.

Dominique Barber is not in that category.

The ex-Gophers strong safety has been training in Florida with a handful of NFL veterans, including his older brother Marion III, to get ready for his pro career. He has signed on with superagent Drew Rosenhaus, but he expects to be taken between the fourth and sixth rounds on the nonglamorous second day of the draft.

That’s because, of course, he ran a 4.7-second 40-yard dash at the combine. Never mind that he produced a 4.58, a time number much more attractive for his position, at the on-campus workout Minnesota held for interested teams earlier this year.

“I know that was my speed,” Barber says confidently and not anxiously.

If you watched even a quarter or two of Gophers football last season, you can be sure that this guy will not only be drafted but stick around in the league for at least a few years. There will undoubtedly be numerous players picked ahead of him, and given much-bigger signing bonuses, who will flame out much faster despite faster 40 times.

Barber held together one of the worst defenses in the history of major college football, making a team-high 100 tackles — the next-closest player had 70 — and breaking up eight passes. He had a sack and three fumble recoveries and took one of them back for a touchdown. As opponent after opponent sliced through the Minnesota front seven and reached the secondary, Barber was usually there to make a saving stop.

To be fair, there were other individual players worthy of performance in Big Ten competition. The preseason dismissal of Dominic Jones and his Animal House friends was a big loss and the new system installed by defensive coordinator Everett Withers didn’t click with the incumbents.

But Barber was the standout. In an interview this week, he sounded eager for his next challenge.

“I’m a complete player,” he says.

Father Marion II carved out a seven-year career with the New York Jets. Older brother Marion was a mere fourth-round pick, and it didn’t take him long to become the featured back with the Dallas Cowboys. The game is in his blood.

“I look at the numbers. It’s just a big emphasis in the draft, the 40 time,” Barber says, “but it all comes down to what you do on the field. There’s a difference between game speed and straight-line speed. My speed in the 40 is a lot different than the way I play football.”

It doesnt matter where we draft a RB. Barber is staying in Dallas.

Jerry will not open the NEW stadium without one of his MAJOR fireworks(Barber).

Book it.

Want Saftey? 3 words: Quintin Demps (UTEP).

Not just a FS but a guy that has the speed and ability to switch to CB if needed (which he did 2nd half of his senior year). His stats don't say much because he had many less passes thrown his way than the other CB UTEP had last season.

PLUS he returns punts/kicks. 4.37 speed at the combine...

People talk poorly of Troy here but the fact is that he had a 5 year career in the NFL -- that's about 5 years longer than the vast majority of guys projected to be picked where DB is going to go. Like it or not, Ham had a decent career when compared to what is typical in the NFL

Especially not when he is pretty slow by NFL standards for the position... especially not when the defense he played on last year was the last ranked defense in all of Division 1... so, you have a defensive back without a lot of speed, whose team's defense was beyond lousy...

I think if the guy's last name wasn't "Barber", none of y'all would have even a slight interest in drafting him... I think I don't, even with the name...
