Could Both Wilcox and Johnson Start?

Just had a thought.. Everyone seems to be putting Wilcox and Johnson against each other for the free safety spot but I think it is entirely possible that Church gets beat out by Wilcox for the strong safety spot.. Wilcox is very physical and can really tackle and hit.

Thoughts?

We shall see, but I do think people are wrong when they say/think we don't have any safeties. I think any of the 3 can play and chances are we'll have some injuries there. So having so many guys at safety can't be a bad thing. My hope is that Johnson will turn out to be as good as advertised. I still have no idea what he looks like vs. NFL competition.

Doubtful. Do you want two safeties starting who has yet to see an NFL snap? Church will start as long as he is healthy IMO. That's not to say he can't get beat out later in the season though.

What I personally want isn't the point.. I am just throwing out an option that hasn't really been discussed around her.. But since your asking.. I don't think Church's few NFL snaps give him as much of an advantage as you are indicating.. He is not exactly a vet.

I agree. I think it mostly depends on who is healthy.

Fair enough, but Church does have some experience there. I think there is almost no chance Wilcox and Johnson start game 1 ;)

You are probably right.. Johnson and Church is the likely combo but I don't think it is impossible

We are running a whole new defense so who played last year is a minimal advantage IMO. My guess is Johnson and Allen will be starting the first few games though.

I think there's 100% chance Church starts, and the other spot is almost up for grabs between the 2 young'ns and that vet we got from the Steelers. I forget his name. To be honest, I'd give the slight edge to the vet at the moment. I'd probably give the edge to Wilcox over Johnson since Wilcox was much more highly regarded coming out of college and they both are essentially rookies. Jerry even admitted Johnson was a reach.

Right now assuming everyone is healthy I think the most likely combo is Church and Johnson.

In the real world I still don't believe Johnson will be healthy and the team will go with Church and Allen to start the year. Hopefully at some point during the year one of Johnson or Wilcox or Hamilton will be healthy and acclimated enough to the defense to challenge Allen for the starting position.

I would love to see Church play the SAM but I'm probably the only one

I seriously doubt that. You wouldn't happen to have a link would you?

I'd have to go through the threads. But someone posted a Jerry quote explaining this year's draft, and he was saying that everyone except Frederick in the first round went when they were supposed to go. Then he implied he could've gotten Johnson later.

You doubt Johnson was a reach or that Jerry would admit it?

For the most part I agree, but I thiink its Church and Allen.

People are sleeping on Allen, he's a good player.

I believe that it is possible.

IMO, Johnson has a high probability of starting if he stays healthy.

I think that Wilcox is going to be better as a rookie than the average small school player. He was really impressive at the Senior Bowl practices.

I think he got Jerry and "a source" mixed up. I'm fairly certain this is the quote he is referencing.....

“All in all, it was probably the most successful draft we’ve had in a while,” a source said. “We got a guy in the fifth round [running back Joseph Randle] we had on the board in the third. We got good value on guys instead or reaching as we did in the past. Last year, we needed a safety and might have pumped a little air in [fourth-round pick Matt Johnson]. We took him earlier than we needed to. That didn’t happen this year, other than maybe the first round. We got good value.”

I think Church proved he could start last year and the team missed him after he got hurt, so I'm doubtful he'll lose his starting job unless he isn't fully recovered from his injury.

Wilcox has tremendous upside, but it's hard for me to believe a player who has been playing the position for only a year in college won't need some adjusting time.

Of course, it could end up ultimately being Wilcox and Church since Johnson also hasn't played on this level yet (but is more experienced at safety in college) and also has injury concerns to overcome.

Would be just nice to me if we end up with three very good, young safeties.
