The last CB spot is primarily going to be a STer. Goodwin is the more versatile ST player, but Canady has been a strong gunner in the past. An edge Canady has on Goodwin is that he has quality tape out there as a sub package CB. So even as a specialist he provides some depth in the secondary. In 2019, he gave up a QB rating of 75, and allowed only 6.9 yards per target on 49 targets

Do you think the team will stay with the more proven and versatile specialist? Or do you think they would go with the specialist that adds depth to the defense

I don't think any of the 2nd tier DB's should feel safe. We have added some talent since last year, including Canady - he sat out last year.
Diggs
Brown
Joseph
Lewis
Wright

That's 5 CB that I am almost positive are sticking

Kazee
Kearse
Wilson
Hooker

that's 4 Safeties that's 9 total DB.. how many are they going to keep?

I think Hooker is a candidate to get IR'ed early with designation to return. We'll have a good idea of where he is physically when/if he practices in Oxnard. Im sure they want to keep Mukwamu to see if he can develop. Kearse is no sure bet. I don't think it's a lock that both Brown AND Lewis will be here after preseason. They can also "break glass" and move Neal back to SS if needed as the backup.

I was expecting that last year because Canady has been a clearly better corner. However, I think Goodwin's performance on special teams has cemented that role for him. Keeping Canady would have to come at the expense of another corner, other DB or another position.

Adding Hooker, I'm having some problem with the numbers.

I've got Diggs, Joseph, Wright, Brown, Lewis and Goodwin sticking. That's six without Reggie Robinson and Canady. If we keep one of those two, that means we either have to go short at safety or go long in the secondary.

I was already leaning toward 11 before we got Hooker. However, now I think the four safeties will be Wilson, Kazee, Hooker and Kearse. That leaves out Mukuamu and Coyle.

It might take care of itself with injuries or poor play, but I think it will be tough cutting three out of Robinson, Canady, Mukuamu and Coyle.
