Could McGee possibly return?

Is it possible that after the first game and Witten is cleared to return to play, that the FO will release Cochart? That way, as I understand, they don't have to guarantee his salary. That will leave an open roster spot. I don't see Garrett leaving the team without a 3rd QB, either on roster or PS. McGee is only eligible for a roster spot, where as, Carpenter is eligible for either, I believe. They could always bring in some other QB but he wouldn't know the plays.

who cares? McGee has not developed. Dallas needs to think about developing Romo's heir in the next draft or two.

Not out of the realm of possibilities. One injury to either Romo or Orton and either McGee or Carpenter will be called up/back.

I think the Cowboys will try to go with two QBs for as long as possible.

THIS!

Why would you want him to? He's a below average QB even after 4 years of developing behind a pro bowler.

did carpenter sign with anyone? wonder why he isn't on practice squad????

Unless Romo is injured, I don't see McGee returning.

As for the guaranteed salary part, it only applies to vested veterans (more than 4 years of experience). And even then, the salary is guaranteed if they are on the roster for week 1, so releasing someone after the fact would be dumb, as you'd essentially be paying them their whole annual salary for playing one game.

Honestly, I think Cochart will stay on the roster so they can take a long look at him. Phillips is a free agent after this season, and if they like what Cochart and Hanna can do behind Witten, they may not have to address it in the draft or free agency next year.

Exactly why would anyone want him to come back?

I don't remember where I saw it, but RHG was quoted as saying he liked carrying three quarterbacks, and I believe it was the day before McGee was released. I would expect him back as soon as Witten is good to go.

Exactly. Cochart is not a threat to Witten (obviously) or even Hanna. Hopefully, what Cochart does is duplicate what Phillips gives us. If Cochart turns out to be better or even the same, Phillips' job is in jeopardy and this is a great pickup.

Get'er done Jerruh !!! Over pay like you normally do too !

I don't think that was the OP's point. Just the fact that we don't have a quarterback who knows the offense, even at 3rd string, doesn't bode well for us down the stretch in case Romo and/or Orton gets hurt.

If Romo gets hurt, we'd still need someone for mop up/blow out duty--not to mention it's a tremendous help in practice to have a 3rd quarterback. That way Romo and Orton don't wear out there arms.

To me having a 3rd quarterback is a no-brainer.
