Something I'm confused about....we made a boatload of cuts yesterday with most teams doing their cuts today. We spent a draft pick yesterday on a player that the Dolphins were likely to cut today, why didn't we just wait for him to get cut instead? Today I'm reading we're considering trading for a Giants castoff, again instead of waiting for him to be cut.

actually, no..we arent trading for the giants WR

we are waiting to see if he gets cut

You trade the 7th to make sure you get the player. Just because he is cut does not mean we would automatically be the ones to aquire him.

They FO didn't want to take a chance the cut player would not be available to them to sign. The only way to be sure another team wouldn't grab him is to trade for him befoe he is cut. We gave up a 7th rounder for a guy that can play a few different positions and instantly adds depth to an area we needed it. Not a bad move.

Not to mention to recoup a 7th round pick during the draft is pretty easy.

Many teams are needing Oline depth right now including teams that would be able to take him on waivers before he got to us. So in that case you can trade a pick/player or some other consideration in order to get to him so he does not get to waivers where a higher team can claim him first.

Concerning the WR...from my understanding if he falls to us, after he is placed on waivers, we MIGHT (still have not seen anything from calvin to suggest the cowboys have or had any interest in this guy) pick him up on waivers...in other words I have not heard we were interested in trading a pick for him.

I thought it was like signing UDFA's after the draft is...so it goes down the list as far as who can claim and who can't?

Just because a player is cut doesn't mean we can sign him. A lesser team can put in a claim. If you want the player, pay the price. A 7th is not bad. Cook has a nasty streak.

For 24 hours it is merit, after 24 hours true free agency.

yep....last team to first have a opportunity to claim.....odds are he would of got picked up.

So a 7th is chump change to pick up a vet who started and gives us depth

Basically goes by draft order (ignore trades). We're 14th priority on waiver claims, so teams like Indy, St. Louis, etc. can claim a player before we can. After a player clears waivers, they are a free agent.

Note that not all players are subject to waivers. Players that have completed four years of service are exempt from the waiver process from Feb. 1 until the trading deadline each season. After the trading deadline, all players are subject to waivers until the end of the season.

Well, I feel better now about it...I just didn't remember that it went with the lesser team record on these particular cuts, thanks hos

So, on Saturday 9/1 at 8pm CST we can begin signing any non-claimed players to our PS?

As far as cutting all the players a day in advance, I think it relates to us having a game in less than a week, while the rest of the league has a full week+ to prepare. We gotta shed the dead weight and get moving forward with our 53 towards game time!

That's what I'm thinking is the case

We apparently didn't think Cook would get through the waiver process, and we needed a player like him desperately.

Douglass or someone, we'll roll the dice and hope in the waiver process.

Cook is a vested veteran and is not subject to the waivers.

The real concern was that if given the choice he wouldn't sign here to be a backup so the Cowboys used the 7th rounder to avoid that decision all together.
