What the Cowboys did with Martin's contract is why this team is such a mess. Pushing $27 million into voidable years while paying Dak $60 million a year is about as incompetent as it gets. As I said with Dak, I would not resign Martin and take his entire CAP hit all in 2025 so he is off the book in 2026 when I take Dak's CAP hit and get him off the books.

This team is going nowhere anytime soon, may as well clean off all the CAP garbage and prepare for an overhaul.
It starts to look better in 2026.

you are right. too much void/dead money in 2025. And Dak....

I'm holding out for a June 1 cut in March 2026.

First off, hopefully we upgrade the OL coach because I think that will go a long way with getting better play up front.

Hoffman looked pretty good and certainly way better than I would have predicted. Right now Tyler, Beebe and Hoffman in the middle (I'm assuming Martin is done) isn't bad. But, Guyton, Steele and Richards looks well below average at OT. I'd still look to add an OL early in the draft. What position we add could go a long way towards what happens with the existing players and which position they play. While I prefer defense based on who I think will be available when we are on the clock, I would be fine adding an OT at pick#12 if they are clearly the BPA. Jerry will not do this because if he does he will have to answer questions about why he took Guyton and why he gave a huge deal to Steele and Jerry will tear the team apart before he will invite second guessing. If we add an OL in the 2nd or 3rd it would still be a good thing IMO. The group as a whole needs to be better and deeper. With the youth on the OL it is very likely improvement comes just from experience and in particular with Guyton.

Just curious

Martin is probably done here...I can see him coming back mainly because he's going to count some $26 million if we don't extend him and if so, then I think this is a moot point

But if we need to replace Martin, could Steele be the answer? His run blocking grade with pff was actually really good, it's the pass protection where he hasn't really returned to his pre injury form
I have to believe that both Martin and Steele are done in Dallas.

Steele has a massive salary and likely plays RT in 2025. If he isn't Pro Bowl level expect him gone before 2026.

Dallas has lot of OG options in-house. Might have been better when Martin went out.

Steele's 2025 salary is GTD.
I could be reading it wrong, but I believe his salary is only guaranteed if not released by March. Is that incorrect?

If his salary is already guaranteed he for sure wont be going anywhere. Thats a much bigger factor than any cap savings to Jerry.

You are absolutely correct!!
I missed that note in the fine print
  • $13.25 million 2025 salary fully guarantees 3/16/2025 (injury guaranteed at sign)

June 1st cut salary cap hit is only $9,400,000 for Martin. Unless he is physically in a much better place than last year he sadly needs to go.

Depending on who the Cowboys get in FA or the draft, Steele could be going also.
IMO, the better move might be to try to get him to take a pay cut, he did appear to improve late in the year. And if he agrees to that, then it would be more palatable a year from now to totally ditch him if he doesn't play better.

A reworked Dallas deal is probably the best he can get, he wouldn't get much more than the minimum if he's cut.

This is a question I have been pondering. Why cut a guy IF he can move to another position?

As a T, he has been a devastating run blocker. Can he be a good G? I don't know, but I lean that he could. If you can reshuffle the players you have and find a combination that works, it free's you up to spend picks in spots of more desperate need.

he will be less of a liability, but his biggest issue is he can't move laterally. although on the outside that's key going against DEs, in the middle its still a need as he has to move left or right to help the other OL men. if he has to go straight ahead, he is less of a liability.

the best thing would be for us to cut him, eat the dead cap and move guyton to the right side. right now the two tackles suck.

i think with mccarthy gone, steele probably soon follows.
or he agrees to a restructure.

I dont hate the thought process here, but I think his salary and how much cap gets freed up comes more into play if you move him inside. That $14M saved by cutting him could be spent on a pretty sure thing guard in free agency since the top guys are only making around $20M. Tackles are probably set to hit the $30M mark this offseason and its tough to find an improvement at that position for what you're saving by cutting him. Even lower end starters at T seem to be around the $15M range.

Any Tackle can play guard, but only a few Guards can play Tackle.

Guyton need to move to RT. Thats his natural position from college. Richards has played exclusively on the Left side his whole career. College and Pro. Put Steele in at RG.

I wasn't looking at money (someone else said his contract would make it difficult to move on) so I was just trying to "rearrange" the deck chairs we already have not go shopping for outside merchandise.

If, and if we get a real coach. Who cares, let him hire the staff he wants and that guy will deal with it. Cut whoever needs to be cut , take the year off and start installing new schemes and new players.

Anything else is a waste.
