The article that got me thinking about this was removed from the St. Louis paper's web site. It did not theorize a return to LA. I am. They talked only about who would control the team. Some of the info below is information I remember from that article I read yesterday. Some of it is my own theories.
With the death of Georgia Frontiere the control of the team returns to the hands of a Rosenbloom. Chip Rosenbloom, the son of Georgia and her 6th of 7 husbands, Carroll Rosenbloom, is likely to take over control of the team. His sister will receive an equal share, but his will be the controlling share.
Each will have 30% ownership of the team. 60% of the ownership was Georgia's and 40% belongs to a gentleman named Stan Kroenke who also has a controlling interest in the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche. So he actually would have more interest than Chip, but Chip maintains control by virtue of having say over his sister's share of the team.
The Nuggets and Avalanche are another reason why Kroenke could not take over. The NFL does not allow cross ownership of teams in other sports leagues unless they are in the same city. For example, Wayne Huzienga had ownership rights with the Miami Heat and Florida Marlins. I can't remember if he ever owned part of the NHL team or not. The Broncos presence in Denver precludes a move of the Rams there. So Kroenke has a built in block of his ownership control.
It is theorized that Chip would keep Team President John Shaw in charge of the football operations of the team and not give himself more control. Chip lives in Los Angeles where he is deeply involved in the film industry. Chip's sister Lucia also lives in Los Angeles. Reason #1 for my theory that the team could move back to Los Angeles.
Chip was briefly removed from any power with the team by his Mother. This happened when she wanted to move the team to St. Louis, her hometown. Chip was opposed to this move because he knew that his Father would have never agreed to it.
For those who don't know, Carroll Rosenbloom's death in 1979 has a swirl of controversy around it. First of all he drowned. He was a champion swimmer. Second of all he was a gambler and may have owed money to the Mob. Georgia was introduced to Carroll Rosenbloom by Joseph Kennedy, Father of John F. Kennedy. (That is not a political statement, I happen to admire the Kennedy's, but there is no denying their power and Joseph's "connections. "They are well documented.) She had been an exotic dancer in Miami, Florida at the time. She had 5 previous marriages. Some think she had Carroll killed, or at least alerted the Mob where and how they could do it.
Chip's loyalty to his Father is the 2nd reason why I think he might move the team back. Before she removed him, he was always around the team. He enjoyed the inner workings of football. It would be virtually impossible for him to immerse himself back into it from Los Angeles where he is having success to St. Louis where the teams resides.
There would be virtually no opposition to him if he chose to move the team back to LA. The Rams have a History there after having their genesis in Cleveland and moving to LA. While the NFL would hate to lose a team in St. Louis again, the lure of the nation's 2nd biggest TV market is as powerful as any lust the NFL has ever had. It is possible they could get involved and help broker the deal. Maybe even try and influence Chip to do exactly this. This is the third reason why I think they could move back.
Chip could sell the team. No doubt Kroenke would like to buy controlling interest and the NFL likes him. However, he would first have to sell his interests in the Nuggets. Either that, or the NFL could waive that requirement if he agreed to return the team to LA. That is the fourth reason why I think the team could move back.
Lastly if Chip decides to sell it to someone else, there is an ownership group in Los Angeles ready to make an offer for an NFL team. The Rams would be their first choice. Forbes magazine estimated the Rams value to be around 900 million dollars. That would mean to take control of the controlling interests in the team Rosenbloom and his sister would have to agree to sell their interests in the team. Appraised value would put 60% of 900 million dollars at $540,000,000 and $270,000,000 apiece. That's if they only asked for appraised value. They could ask for more. It would be hard to turn that kind of money down. Reason number five.
Lastly, the Rams are still in the NFC West, and Los Angeles is more West than St. Louis is.
Hey, it's just a theory.
