My understanding is he coached the arena league teams in Dallas, and sort of fell into the scouting role that way.

My question is, and I ask because I honestly don't know, could will McClay ever coach in the NFL in any capacity?

I'm going to guess no.

As a coach:

Detroit Drive (SP) (1993)
Milwaukee Mustangs (DC) (1995)
Florida Bobcats (DC) (1996)
Anaheim Piranhas (DC) (1997)
Grand Rapids Rampage (ASST) (1998)
Grand Rapids Rampage (1999)
Dallas Desperados (DC) (2002–2003)
Dallas Desperados (2004–2008)

I also found this: In 2006 McClay earned the honor of AFL Coach of the Year and was chosen by the other 18 coaches in the AFL as Coach of the Year.

Player evaluation is a different skill set than coaching. The best coaches don't always pick the best players.

NFL parity can be defeated when it is realized that there is no such thing as a salary cap in the scouting department.

However, Jerry better be prepared to spend some money if he wants to keep this talented group. They are no longer a secret if they have ever been. Other teams are taking notice of the Cowboys special ability to find real talent in the 3rd day of NFL drafts and even in rookie free agency.

My first inclination is to say NO......but with Jerry you never know, he loves his puppets. No doubt DQ would take offense and get a first class ticket on Amtrak out of Dallas to Seattle if that happened.

Since I'm not the biggest fan of the team's GM, HC or QB1...
My bizarro world dream would be Jerry to fall ill(not die, okay) and MCClay be made temporary GM and name Quinn HC and Coop at QB.

Then the team be carried over the SB finish line by a 2000 Ravens type defense in which our version of Ray Lewis, Micah Parsons, wins SB MVP.

And then I wake up.

If Jeff Saturday could coach in the NFL, so could he.
I'm not saying he'd be a great HC or a bad HC. I'm just saying he would be able to coach.

Now see in the other thread you said people tell you to follow other teams....and I now see why. You would like for Jerry in his late 70's to fall "ill".....it just seems like it would be easier for you to follow someone else if its that deep.

Man one thing I noticed when these "top coaches" came out is that I don't see many Bellicheat's.......There's a handful of guys that I think you can look at and see their effects on the game. So yeah i'm sure he could coach about as good as 70% of the league can. He has a great gig now though.

btg41 mentioned that in his post. I merely agreed.
But yeah,
If my "dream" bothers you I apologize.

I'll continue to deeply follow my team in any way that I choose to.

It doesn't bother me at all. I've seen some of the dumb reasons fans root against their team. Wishing ill on Jerry....I don't understand it but I surely am not shocked.

The weird thing is,
IF this "dream" were to come true and Dallas won a SB under these dream like circumstances,
You wouldn't be able to enjoy it because my dream did not meet your opinion agenda.

Whereas I can enjoy a SB win even if the GM, HC and QB remain the same.

You feel you have to regulate opinion if it doesn't match yours.

I ig or move on.
Which I'll do now.

Cowboys! lol

He has never coached any kind of football or any level of football other than arena league, and he hasn't even done that in 15 years. I would hate to say he can't do it, but there is no solid foundation for believing he could be a good NFL coach.

Not sure about coach, but I bet he would be a better GM than Jerry.

Not at all lol. All I said was I don’t understand wishing illnesss on someone. That’s crazy that you think that doesn’t fit “opinion agenda” or that I’m regulating your opinion. Weird.

Fair enough.
I figured you under stood both the word dream and that I didn't want the dude to die as the simple what if/ dream hypothetical as I thought I had described.

And nope,
I dont wish/hope sickness on the owner in reality either.

No worries.

OK, now that I've unintentionally bumped this off the second page (I apologize and feel free to send it back. Just got busy.), I have to say nice comment here.

He's found his niche, and he's very good at it. Whether he could coach or not I have no idea. I suppose anybody can coach, but winning as a coach is a different deal.
