They made an American version that was intended to replace Friends and it bombed horribly. I'll be honest, some British shows are just too dry for me. I love Monty Python, Benny Hill and a lot of British humor in general but some of their "serials" are just too slow and dry. For example, I think the American version of the "Office" is so much better than the British version. My problem with British shows are not the writing but the direction and dialogue. They are so incredibly witty that they will include several jokes and puns in one sentence but the problem is it occurs so fast with a deadpan delivery that it's almost robotic in a sense.
Have you seen 30 Rock? Now that is totally my type of humor. I still laugh about the Middle Easterners who were suspected of being terrorists but were really taping themselves for an audition of the Amazing Race.
