There is plenty to be discouraged about Dallas 2013 season. The team finished 8-8 and missed out on the playoffs once again, but there is also a lot to be encouraged about. Since it’s the beginning of a new year and it’s time to be positive, here are some of the things Cowboy fans can hang their hat on going into the 2014 season and beyond.
Probably the most encouraging thing about the 2013 season was the improvement of the offensive line. Tyron Smith bounced back from an up-and-down 2012 campaign to being one of the most dominant tackles in the league. According to Pro Football Focus, the Cowboys had the best pair of tackles in the NFL with Smith grading out 5th and 18th in the league respectively.
Before I get to this next point, I have to give credit to a friend of mine named Percy Howard from multiple online forums. This was a point he made to me on how the Cowboys finished 8-8 this season. He stated that offensively, Dallas had the fourth highest point total per drive. This stat says that with an average defense, we should have had the fourth best regular season W-L record. Dallas also had the seventh highest team passer rating (Romo’s and Orton’s combined rating), which, again with an average defense, should have resulted in the seventh best record in the NFL. Assuming the defense had been average, the Cowboys should have been an 11-5 team this year.
