Cover32: Why The Stats Say Tony Romo = MVP

It’s no secret that I have been a Tony Romo supporter. I’ve made the case multiple times that he is much better than he’s been given credit for and absolutely one of the top ten quarterbacks in the league. But this year, I believe he has been the NFL’s best quarterback, despite the great seasons by Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. It’s why I believe he should be voted as the NFL’s MVP. Deep down, I know he won’t be the leagues NFL MVP for a variety of popularity reasons (we will get to that later), but here’s my case anyways:

- Tony Romo currently leads the NFL in Passer Rating at 114.4. Aaron Rodgers is second at 111 with Peyton Manning at 106.4 and Tom Brady at 98.3. This is Romo’s second year with a passer rating over 100.

- Tony Romo also leads the NFL in completion percentage, completing 70.3% of his passes. No other quarterback in the NFL has a completion percentage over 70%. Aaron Rodgers has a completion percentage of 65.1% and Brady is currently sitting at 64.5%.

- Romo also leads the league in yards/attempt at 8.5.

- According to ESPNs QBR stat (on a scale of 0-100), Tony Romo leads the league with a 82.3 rating. Only Romo, Aaron Rodgers and Peyton Manning have QBRs over 76.

- Despite missing one game, Tony Romo set an NFL record of having at least six games with a passer rating of at least 135.0. Romo currently has nine games with a passer rating of at least 110.

And 538 posted an article today that says the stats put Rodgers ahead of Romo.

Anyhow, even if Romo was clearly ahead of Rodgers, I have a feeling that the writers would vote for JJ Watt instead. I'm guessing that neither Romo nor Murray will finish higher than third in the voting.

I saw that actually. 538 were the same group that predicted DAL to go 3-13, right?

Romo won't finish in the top 5 probably. He should win it but the evil media will not allow it. I got in a fight with friends and co-workers over him last night on Facebook. Not one person gave him props, it was all because of the line and Murray. The last two games were not big games because it wasn't an elimination game. So, whats next after Tony wins a playoff game? It will probably not matter......everyone's opinions are set in stone :(

I heard some media guys today say if they took away the Dallas Cowboys name and replaced it with the Patriots, they would be the SB favorite....that is insane.

Romo would not even get his due after a Super Bowl win, it will then go to two, three, etc. He will never be good enough for the media and fan haters.

I am sorry, but Watt should not win it. They will not even make the playoffs and as far as I know, that comes into play unless a Cowboy is involved.

Sick and tired of the bias.....................

The rate stats favor Romo, but Rodgers has accumulated a lot more volume (and played in one more game).

he's ahead by 500 yards and 4 TD's while tony missed 1.5 games.

its not like he's freight-training tony or anything and is 10+ TD's ahead

Leading the NFL in completion % and YPA is the most fascinating stat I think. It's not like he's just completing 4 yard bubble screens and check downs to get there.

That's a great point.
Actually, the more I think about it, the more I think it's not really that good of a point lol

YPA is always going to go up if you're completing most of your passes simply because they aren't 0 yards. YPC would be more telling in this case about pushing the ball downfield while still having a high completion rate. Romo is 9th at 12.1 in that category, Rodgers is at 12.8.

I believe only Romo, Brady, Warner and Young have led in both during the same year.

Yea, I went back and looked a bit and, even if someone didn't lead the league in YPA, they were right up there near the top it seemed.

We lost the game Romo wasn't in, as well as the other 3 that Romo wasn't 100%. When Murray was limited we still won. I think those help Romo's case...
