Coverage Observation

In watching some games this weekend, and in particular the Chargers-EGals, last night I couldn't help but notice mostly all of their coverages are pretty damn tight while ours are disgustingly loose. Opposing receivers are so wide open it makes me want to puke. College DB's have tighter coverage. We line up 10 yds+ off the line with 5yds to go. Is this scheme or execution...or both. All I know is it sucks and until we can tighten things up, we're going to continue to get torched like we have been. I just don't understand why the hell we continue to do what doesn't work. Wrong personnel? Wrong scheme? Wrong coaching? Frustrating as all get out watching this. Talk me off the ledge or push me off...

It's the most frustrating thing: how Eberflus runs such a rigid scheme that almost always fails.

Does. Not. Work.

I’ve noticed the same thing. It’s like we’re playing a prevent defense every play. Yet other teams DBs seem to have every receiver locked down pretty tight. I remember how much better our coverage was with pretty much the same players when Al Harris was the DB coach. Eberflus has been exposed as a fraud.

Eberflus' zone defence sucks.
But why does everyone assume we have the athletes to play man to man?
Why, me lovable louts, why?
because we do? even Revel the rookie played mostly Man in College.Eberflus is the dumbest coach we have ever had in Cowboys history.

There isn't a silver bullet (if that's what you're alluding to).
Most teams play a higher percentage of 'zone'. It's the DB's knowing their zone, the 'point of transfer'.
Play Press....well yes that would probably suit Revel, but it certainly doesn't suit Diggs (nor Bland).
I would imagine the biggest 'issue' is we don't have an elite (or even good) FS that can cover on blown-coverage if/when we play man. If we add the limited pass-rush, we aren't suited for playing a Quinn style: 'blitz and pick'....so playing this : somewhat passive defense is understandable.

These coaches suck.

It's the scheme mostly. Same crappy scheme since wade Phillips. The only goal of bend don't break is keep the opponent in front of you. So guys play scared, they play off, receivers get a free release with plenty of room to make their break creating more room.

Don't you love it when the opposing QB dumps the ball into the flat and the RB has 15 yards of open space to run through. When Dak dumps it off, 3 guys are there to clobber the RB or TE.

I have no idea what Eberflus coaches but it is astonishing how poorly the Cowboys play the pass.

This was a big problem with Marinelli's defenses and the last time EberFlu was here as the LB coach. It got fixed somewhat under Quinn and now it's back.

Apparently by observation, it can be postulated that Jerry is still obsessed with the Tampa-2 or Cover-2 and is dead set that it's still relevant and dedicated to insisting on it, hence the Eberflus hire. Nevermind that we have the personnel for more of a man scheme. There is a time and place for prevent, but Eberflus runs it way too often and having the players play that far back is a joke. To get away with it, you need constant and reliable pressure on the opposing QB, something our line is often incapable of doing, but screw adjustments. Players just need to change reality and magically make it work.

Slants are us. Against EberLax defenses. You play off on a receiver it makes it far easier for the receiver to get to his route. But this is the scheme EberLax loves.

This disgusting act started long before Eberflus it’s been going on for 10 years. Realy longer. We used to don’t when our starting corners were injured. The Nates jones and Jacques’s reeves. And then we started doing it with our starters

can't let these guys play Man v Man when they don't even know how to jam at the line.

It's hard to tell with the normal broadcast, but someone told me the Chargers were sending 3, and sometimes 2 WRs into the pattern to better protect Herbert in the 2nd half. Maybe that's why it seemed like Herbert couldn't find anyone.

Like I said, I can't tell with the normal broadcast. If it was Thursday night football where you watch all 11 on every play, that would be different.

It's worse because the pass rush is garbage. They put very little pressure on opponents.

No it’s not understandable it’s insanity!

You can’t do the same thing over and over again if you have mediocre zone defenders. You have to mix it up. Zone blitz, blitz using stunts etc. Don’t just sit back in your lame soft zone, you know a decent QB will pick apart.
