Donalds game is not as a space eater. He is a penetrator.

You would be wasting his talent as a 1 technique tackle. Moving Collins to the 1 is the same thing.

They basically play the same position.
Marinelli employs "rushmen" so if you have the chance to get an all pro DT who fits your scheme like a glove you have to do it. In basketball terms, the Portland Trail blazers are probably still kicking themselves for drafting David Bowie - and not Michael Jordan - because they already had Clyde Drexler on the roster.

We should always look to acquire talent. Let Marinelli figure out how to make it work. I'm sure he can.

Two 1st rounders would be around 28-32 range since we would be perennial playoff contenders, basically guranteed. We would finally have a Giants type front 7 that would transform our defense. We lost in the playoffs last year because our defense let us down. With AD onboard, that won't be the case no more. Gone would be the days that our offense would carry our defense (even though they can still do it).

So, the above is a long answer to your question: yep, I would do it in a heartbeat and not think twice.
Why couldn't we afford both Donald and Martin? That's what I'm not understanding

David Irving and Maliek Collins could rush in passing downs as the two interior guys, and then with Taco and Lawrence on the edge - that's not bad right there. Donald is another Ratliff mistake we shouldn't make. He's amazing, but I'll bet you Collins gets just as good numbers this year.
Can't agree here. Unlike Ratliff, Donald is a 3x pro bowler before we signed him to big money. 3 years in the league, 3x all pro. He's the truth.

Now, Collins shows some promise but I can't put him on Donald's level quite yet. He's gonna be good though - which may be a reason why Jerry don't pull the trigger. I would though.

Great player, but no.

You would have to give up the moon to get him. Cost you $15M-$20M to sign him. And his production, while better than Maliek Collins, would not be sufficiently better to justify what you gave up to acquire and sign him.

DT isn't the issue on that D-line. Edge rusher is.

I agree that we shouldn't give up two firsts on top of the huge contract we'd have to offer; but, as much as I love Collins, he's no Aaron Donald and shouldn't figure into the equation.

Poignant observation.
If you could choose, which way would you go?
I would choose Donald, all things being equal...
yeah it's a tough one to be sure.. a lot of different factors to weigh

I'd probably go with Martin. price tag won't be as high (maybe get a slight hometown discount), still young so long career left. already an All-Pro and elite talent at guard is not easy to find in this league.

If I could get Donald, I wouldnt care about wasting Collins at the 1 Tech.

Donald is that dominant.
With them in tandem our edge rushers would get one on one action early and often. Offensive Coordinators would have to account for these two bulls which will make life a little easier for our secondary too.

No what?

We already have two dominant linemen on offense. We have nothing on defense. Easy decision.

When this defense falters again in the playoffs, youre going to wish we had a player like Donald on this team.

it was such a dee bag tweet. does he also tweet the 1800 times he's wrong? that and alex smith hasn't been nearly prolific ONCE in his career as dak was his rookie season. unless dak regresses and stays their the rest of his career, the comparison is still idiotic.
Is everyone missing where he said Dak has much higher upside?

David Bowie wasn't a bust. He went on to make great music.

This guy gets it. Collins is our version of Donald (albeit it, not quite on the same level...yet).
