Cowboy Wire: How Steele is finally worth his $86M contract

Because inflation and cap increases have made that the vet minimum?

The first ability is availability.
The second is to not suck
The third you don't pay a player for one good season, especially if injury is involved

The Man of Steele has certainly come up against his share of kryptonite:rolleyes:

Wow you pay a premium for a player that is partially effective and then you point to his durability as one of his best traits. We overpaid and have been unable to find his replacmeent.
Anytime we draft a player or sign an undrafted free agent and he shows average to above average play, we immediately overpay him. Steele has sucked the second he signed that contract, just like 9 out of 10 players here after their second contract is signed.

He’s counting less than $9m against the cap and not in the top ten RT in aav

He’s a really good run blocker but below average pass blocker

He played more snaps than any OT in the league last year.

People love to hate on him but that’s because they demand every RT be Erik Williams minus the multiple sexual assaults and other crimes.

The guy is serviceable and we have many bigger issues.

The fact that both left and right tackles are not adequate in pass protection on a team that has two #1 receivers is a huge concern. If the left tackle could hold his own in pass pro, then we could send some help to Steele's side, or visa versa, but both sides needing help is a fatal deficiency.

We need to run more anyway, so if Steele's forte is run-blocking, and he's good at it, well ........

The O-Line depth might be somewhat tenuous, but that's a problem almost every team has. The O-Line's issues, other than untimely penalties here and there, are not whats keeping the Cowboys out of the playoffs.

He is good at half his job (run blocking). Why should we be glad he plays a lot of snaps when he sucks at half of the snaps? I dont expect him to be a EW but we should not be content with average to below average players. Find a better player and move on.

Yes and the simple fact is we had far too many holes entering the off season. You can't upgrade everywhere. This is also the same fanbase who trashed Doug Free because of his cost, even after agreeing to a pay cut. Consequently I dont see Steele getting a ton of leeway.

“Find a better player”

I bet they hadn’t even considered that

He sucks plain and simple and we should’ve already moved on from his suck azzz.

Those are some hard hitting stats. Thanks for your contribution.

For those who probably aren’t familiar with his play beyond what they see in comments like the one above, here are at least some a few bits of info to take into consideration

  • Total Snaps: 1,163 offensive snaps played (first in the NFL)
  • Pass-Blocking Snaps: 602 snaps (yielded 3 sacks and 9 QB hits)
  • Run-Blocking: Earned elite run-blocking grades, ranking among the league's top 10 qualifying tackles with a roughly 79% run-block win rate.
  • Penalties: Commmitted only two penalties over the entire season.
  • Season Grade: Finished with a 63.6 overall PFF grade, ranking 55th out of 89 qualified NFL offensive tackles.
Kinda looks like average to me.

The Cowboys had exactly one pro bowl player on Offense and none on defense.

You’d think that with the beating Steele takes around here that all of the other guys were bound for the Hall of Fame.

You can’t address every need every off season, I’m sure that if the defense wasn’t an absolute wasteland, they would have addressed the OL, which is something they spend more draft capital on than most teams.

Steele is way down my list of priorities.

By the way, here are some details on the elite Tyler Smith, who received an NFL record setting contract for interior linemen last off season.

  • Run Blocking: 81.1 grade (Ranked 5th among all NFL guards)
  • Pass Blocking: 65.4 grade (Ranked 30th among all NFL guards)
  • Pressures Allowed: 26 total pressures (including 3 sacks on 1,110 offensive snaps)
Does Tyler Smith “suck”?

It’s all PFF based, which isn’t even internally consistent at times, but it’s better than “I saw some plays where he looked lost last season, or maybe it was two years ago”.
