CowboyJoe’s Mock Draft

Right now, I am assuming we will draft somewhere around the 8th draft slot. Feel free to post, what you think, agree or disagree with.

1. Patrick Peterson CB/S (First, we take phone calls for Marion Barber, talking to Bengals & Detroit, with Miami.) We take best offer, swapping first round picks with Bengals or Detroit, Barber included and we get a 5th round draft choice too.
Thus we take Patrick Peterson. If we stay where we are, we take Marcell Dareus DT

2. Nate Solder OT too much ability to pass up, can groom into ROT

3. Make a trade with New England: pick up their 3rd for ours and their 4th rounder. We take Stefen Wisniewski OG, Wisniewski can play OG and C. or Jordan Holmes OC/OG Oregon 6-5, 294

4. Allen Bradford – RB Replaces Barber from USC.
4. DE/DT Karl Klug Iowa 6-3 #270 A plugger at DE, strong, allows us to rest Igor, Bowen and Ratliff.

5. Owen Marecic FB 6-1 245 This move will allow us to go back to the moose days.
5. Benjamin Ijalana OT Villanova 6-4 320, will back up Doug Free at LOT, this is one of my old time pet cats, that people are starting to hear about. He could go as high as 4th round or 3rd, but from reports ive heard, unless he has a super combine, will go in 5th.

6. Matt Barr QB Western Illinois 6-2 210 (could be steal of century & another Tom Brady type player taken at QB in 6th round.
6. Phil Taylor DT Baylor 6-4 355 This move will allow us to move Jay Ratliff at DE for spears, while Brent and Taylor lock down NT.

7. Cecil Shorts WR Mount Union 6-0 190 4.43 Going on what Hostile said about this guy, (I have some pet cats, that some of you don’t know about yet, but I don’t want to give them up yet, but I will start posting them in January).

Note, why I didn’t take a safety or cb besides Patrick Peterson is that I still feel that Ansah will be a future star at safety. Then, we have Teddy Williams at CB who is on practice squad, this kid runs a 4.26, that’s right, 4.26 in 40. I feel from what I saw of him in training camp he will be a shut down CB in 2 years, after he learns defenses and covering routes. Teddy Williams already knows about some routes since playing WR at high school. And we fixed our run blocking with getting phil taylor at big plugger at NT and Marecic at FB, another Moose at FB type player.

My main moves as you could tell was to fix our offensive line woes, that is done, and our secondary woes, with Patrick Peterson, Ansah coming back from injury, and Teddy Williams our secondary is fixed.

look for Wis to be a late 1st early 2nd...

I would rather trade down in the 1st, add another 2nd....get Stephen Paea and then get Stefen Wisniewski.....

i've watched quite a bit of detroit this year and my friend is a dolphins fan. don't see either team being interested in barber to be honest

why im going with detroit, is that we ran against them with some success with barber, and detroit needs a rb

next, if you look at miami, they have about 5 to 6 ex cowboys players on their roster, and we have traded 3 or more players to the dolphins, and sparano knows dallas cowboys players

if choice has another good game, jerry jones might wake up and see that choice can run, and is running better then barber, thus you can trade barber

tsk tsk tsk...did we not learn anything from last year buddy?

I like Pea, but i dont think he is worth a top 10 pick, wisniewski has some injury history problems and he may fall some, most injuried players with injury history do

if were picking anywhere from the 12th slot to 15th slot, i say yes, trade down, but if somehow we stay at 8th slot, try and trade up alittle to get Fairley or Peterson. I like the DT Fairley but he has an injured shoulder, so I would rather have CB/S Peterson, who also excels at returning kicks and can play really well at cb but has been said that peterson with his size reminds some people of a young darren woodson that could be an impact player at safety, ala ronnie lott . This team needs impact players like a Dez Bryant at other positions. Newman is getting old now nad beat up. So, if somehow u can get Peterson, try!

the cowboys in mid 70s, were in superbowl contention for making trades and having high picks in top 5, players like Ed Jones, Randy White and Tony Dorsett

the cowboys did the same thing in early 90s, with top 5 picks of
Troy Aikman, Russell Maryland, and top 17 picks in Alvin Harper, and Emmitt Smith, im not sure where kevin smith cb was drafted in first round,

most super bowl teams that make a run at more then one superbowl in their era, ala cowboys mid 70s, early 90s, 49ers mid 80s, steelers in 70s, had impact players at the top of the draft

last high impact players we have drafted were newman at 5th in 1st round, roy williams safety 8th in 1st round, and ware at 11th in 1st round;

we got an impact player in dez bryant this year because he fell
to 24th slot, most impact players dont fall that far, but our top 12 picks in first round

we need another top impact player, most likely on defense to put some more spark on our defense, like dez does on offense.

sean lee will be one of those players too, i feel, because the cowboys had him listed on their board at 16th in 1st round, even mike singletary told the cowboys that they stole him, and that singletary said he was the best middlelinebacker coming out of college that he has seen since patrick willis

we need impact players on this team, that puts fire, intensity like dez does or just look at how Suh does for the Lions on defense, thats exactly type of player that the cowboys need, Fairley or Peterson. I like Dareus, but he reminds me alittle of a marcus spears, good player but not impact on defense.

learn what buddy?

i feel that we can at least get a 4th to 5th pick for barber, and that we can use barber in a trade up move, 2 to 3 slots if needed. I think you can get a 4th for barber, so by only taking a 5th for barber, you might be able to use that also to move up some, and still get a pick too.

You also felt last year that we would make about 55 trades (of course I am exaggerating the number) that never seemed to materialize.

I think you go on these wild draft trade tangents every year yet they rarely if ever go anywhere near what you think.

I give you credit for your consistency in this draft trade fantasy though, nobody will keep you down.

no, lol, i didnt have that many trades, and if u look at this draft mock so far, ive only got what 2 trades, just 2 trades

and lets see now we did trade up for dez, and we made another trade involving lee right, and we used that extra pick to get ansah right?

now lets see, we did some players i said we would trade, we finally did trade them this year, and remember now brain, some of you zoners told me you couldnt get an aspirin for mcquistan, but what did we get for him?
and we did trade crayton

:D

I am not sure if we will get anything for McQ...that and the Crayton trades are conditional. Crayton will not make the requirements for us to get the higher pick.

Also...we traded those players after the draft, not before If I recall correctly.

You do a great job with the draft, the players and everything...except for the trade scenarios...it is your kryptonite.

I think we do get the pick for McQuistan,he is playing, and met requirements I think. There still is time for Crayton to get some catches, (just needs 12 more catches i believe) he should come back after this week, was suppose to miss 2 weeks from reports.

we did trade them after the draft, but i was right we traded them, so thats why i had them in my draft last year,

granted my trade scenarios arent working out real well, but you can at least dream and hope

guess i have to get my lead suit out to counter your kryptonite! :)

Nice mock, the only thing is i dont believe barber will fetch that much value to trade up that far. Trading with detroit or the bengals will require probably around a low-mid 2nd round and i just dont see him being worth that and a 5th. Personally i was gonna say a 5th only expecially with his contract. Also dont the pats usually want to add pics not give them up?

I love Ijalana, but he'll play guard in the pros and be long gone by round 5.

your probably right about barber, but im hoping that the lions or bengals see that there is no sure fire rb in first round, except alabama rb and he shouldnt be taken till about 15th pick in 1st round, so someone might be willing to give something up for barber, at least i can dream and hope, (ive heard we can get a 4th for him) pats generally do want to add picks, but since we might pick higher then they do, and we made a trade with them last year, they may make a trade with us to move up in this draft to get a certain player

ive heard he can go anywhere from 3rd to 5th round, depending on which mock draft site you look at;

i have a few sources, and i should know more where he might go after combine

some of my players you might be able to swap them around, say the de to 5th round and take igalana in 4th round if he falls that far, or doesnt get taken high since he is from a smaller school

ive heard he will be able to play OG and OT

Good effort Joe.. thanks for posting.

I think that the trade scenario you set up with our first round pick is a little unreasonable. If im letting another team trade up at the beginning of the first round, i want more back then a 5th round pick.

I would love to have Stefen Wisneiwski here out of PSU. He's a blue collar guy, tough, hard worker, intelligent, and would upgrade our line right away. I doubt he'll be around in the 3rd round though, but he'd be a fine 2nd round pick for us.

If some of you remember the name, we picked his uncle in the '89 draft out of Penn State as well. He went on to play in 8 pro bowls with the Raiders.

That's what I like about that pick and also the Winsewski (sp?) pick and I think what the cowboys would also like so I imagine they are looking at both. The ability to be swing players if need be until they eventually wind up starting (if they pan out of course).

I think we will want to revamp our O-Line via FA and the draft but I don't think they want to spend a good deal via FA.

So I think getting versatility in the players we are looking to draft is a concern for the cowboys.

I think the only player that is completely set in stone for the online next year is Free, whether that is L or R OT.

I think the others could be replaced if they get what they want.

That idea is what has kind of irritated me about some of the other mock drafts that don't have us taking an O-Line until later rounds (not talking about just skipping the first round).

Now there is a trend for us to go light in the first few rounds (except the second round)...so that is established but I have to think that sooner or later they are going to change that due to the o-line getting older. I think they have put that on the back burner too long or spent too high via FA.

true buddy, i am hoping that jerry jones makes a run at Mankins at OG, that will fill one need, then we can focus in draft at ROT and OG, since leonard davis might not be here next year, and kosier is a free agent next year and beat up every year with injury, and we do need a center to replace gurode, thats why i put the oregon center there if we dont get wineswki,

columbo as you know is on his last legs i think

Pretty nice mock, Joe...actually it's really good. I wouldn't be mad at this at all, as long as we get a decent FS in free agency. Hell I'd be open to resigning Ken Hamlin.
