(Let me say first off that some of the cap numbers listed below are as of today and are obviously still in flex with Free agency and the draft still in play)

One of my favorite sports sites is spotrac.com. It provides lots of great information about teams’ salary cap info, player contracts, and details that go with all that. I found it interesting today to browse through the Cowboys current cap numbers by position and how that compares with the rest of the NFL.

Here is the link to the Cowboys cap spending by position: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/dallas-cowboys/positional/ If you scroll down, you can see each position and how much is spent by position. Note that there are a couple of mistakes with where they place players.

Some interesting highlights from that link regarding how we stack up in positional spending vs the rest of the NFL:
  • The Cowboys are #2 in the league in spending on OFFENSE.
  • We are #18 in the league in spending on DEFENSE.
Those numbers will probably change somewhat by the end of the offseason because of FA.
Some Examples of Spending By Individual positions:
  • RB- The Cowboys rank #1 in the league in spending on the RB position in 2021 (7.75% of our cap)
  • WR- we rank 5th in spending on WRs. (15.7% of our cap)
  • QB- because of Dak’s contract structure in 2021, we are currently ranked #9 in QB spending (11.8% of our cap space)
  • Secondary: We rank 23rd in spending on CB’s and S’s. (10.4% of our cap)
Rather than me listing each position, you can look them up on the linked site.
It will be interesting to see how the offseason continues to impact the cap by position.

Good post, Bob. If you could go back about 20 years and see if the same trend is there you will see why this team has failed each and every year. The FO doesn't have a clue how to balance things out. Top heavy contracts to average offensive players is absolutely killing them. In my opinion only the best of the best deserve the huge contracts, but Jerry hands them out like candy to damn near every one he can.

The top contract players for Dallas, Zeke, Dak, Amari, Jaylon, etc, are not the best of the best at their positions, so why is Jerry paying them like they are top of the line MVP players every season? They're not.....

Heavy on offense and average on defense is by design. All you haters shut your traps and learn something. It may not be how you would manage the team but then again, you don't. This ratio of the distribution of resources is not an accident. The defense does need more attention now but they are well into that process this offseason. The draft should be very interesting.

With the salary cap I do not see how that is possible.
I hear you. But maybe it underscores the importance of drafting well and maximizing your young talent when they are are cheaper. If we can get some draft help this year on defense, maybe the defensive turnaround we all want is near. That’s obviously a big IF, lol.

If I read it right, Tampa Bay’s rankings 3rd for offense and 30th to defense.

Jerry convinced himself that Zeke was Emmitt 2.0, but Stephen also said publicly that it starts with the Gurley contract and goes from there.

All 14 teams who made the playoffs last year:
  • Tampa Bay: offense- 3rd, defense- 30th
  • Kansas City: offense-30th, defense- 10th (surprising)
  • Buffalo: offense-17th, defense- 2nd
  • LA Rams: offense- 26th, defense- 17th
  • Green Bay: offense-5th, defense- 19th
  • Pittsburg: offense- 28th, defense- 22nd
  • Tennessee: offense- 6th, defense- 30th
  • Indy: offense- 14th, defense- 18th
  • Cleveland: offense- 1st, defense- 27th
  • Seattle: offense-4th, defense-24th
  • Wash: offense-5th, defense-20th
  • Balt: offense 32, defense-12th
  • Chicago: offense-19th, defense- 11th
  • New Orleans: offense-12th, defense- 23rd

ya, thats was some major SMH off times for sure.
Jerry and son should have just thrown a big party during negotiations, we want the world to know, etc.. show your hand much, and Jerry is supposed to be the gambler...lol
I think Jerry just got that tag from being around Jimmy.

Jerry gave the ticket-buying fans what they wanted. They wanted Elliott to get paid. The ticket-buying fans convinced themselves that Elliott was the next Emmitt.

The fans screamed ‘pay the man he deserves it.’ So Jerry paid the man and the money continues to pour in as the fans are happy with their entertainment.
